In response to ongoing pleas for player assistance (http://www.wargamer.com/forums/fb.ashx?m=556038), a Harpoon for Dummies channel has opened on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/HarPlonked) to help Harpoon players navigate the complexities of the game and to deliver the best possible playing experience. These series of video tutorials will continue to be written as needed and as requested. Many thanks to Ian Bowes (a.k.a. Spelk), amongst others, for speaking up and specifically requesting such videos be made and for the kind assistance he provided in reviewing them.

When AGM HARMs are launched from Hornets you can select the sensor at which they are targeted, so the question here is; which radar sensor to choose...??

All Anti-Radiation Missiles [ARMs] can be assigned a specific sensor target. With respect to selection of sensor for destruction, that is more difficult.

If you look in the PlayersDB while playing, you can select a unit such as the BCGN Kirov and then hit the Database function. Once the unit appears, you can select the Sensors button to show the various sensors aboard that unit.

Under the sensors shown, you can select the Top Dome radar and a text description appears:
"SA-N-6 missile guidance group"

Unfortunately, not all radar systems have text like this written for them. The only way to know which sensor is assigned to which weapon is through experience or use of the database editor, at this time.

I tried to create a small scenario (for my own learning and testing purposes) in which an F-15C had a mission to intercept a CH-53. His distance was ~43 nautical miles.

The F-15 had an AAW loadout and was at low altitude, the CH-53 was flying nap of the earth.

The idea for the F-15 was simply to upon scenario start kill the CH-53 (there are others trying to defend it).

I tried several things and could not get the plane to do what I wanted it to do.

The first was to simply create an intercept mission. The second was to manually have it fly and maybe I would get lucky. The third is AAW patrol, but I think I did something horribly wrong there (I put out 2 reference points? Possibly needed more?) because he just spun around in the air looking for something to do, wasting good ole tax dollars on that cheap ole gas.

I did realize one fatal error... I forgot to turn his radar on (who says Eagles can't be blind and still hunt?) So I attempted active radar at intervals to maintain a bit of stealth. Still... no luck.

I asked a veteran for some help on the issue... his answer... put a unit on the ground to spot the CH-53. Not exactly what I wanted... but I imagine it works (haven't tried it as of this posting).

So... he asked me to put this post up to see if any of the community had thoughts on how to do this effectively and/or correctly so a video can be made for creating interception missions. (at least I hope that's what he was wanting).

Does anyone know how to do my scenario effectively, or any air intercept mission effectively for that matter?

I find very difficult to play this scen from USA side, only 4 F-15´s a pair of Orions and a DDG are quickly attacked and burned by lots of planes that seem to come from coastal Venezuela air bases.
I set the DDG to Puerto La Cruz and launch a P3 and then F-15´s to attack enemy planes flying near my ship,but they are quickly shot down.
Any ideas ??

Question about the AI: How come the are so generous with their emitting radar? This becomes especially clear in the dawn patrol scenario where it seems almost to easy(note seems, im not saying it is..). If they have link you would expect only one of the contacts to radiate and just link the information over to the others.

I am a returning Harpoon player, but this is my first time out with H3/ANW/HUE.

I am working of the 2nd scenario in the classics GUIK set.

I am encountering the following puzzling behaviour:

1) I attempt to ready one of the Lynx choppers with ASuW missiles. It reports that it will take 6 hours (is this really how long it takes to swap out a weapons loadout - I don't know I am just asking). Anyway, I tells me it will take 6 hours. BUt it still lists both Lynx choppers with 2 torpedoes loaded. At some point after some hours, if I check on the Lynx again, it still shows them both as having 2 torpedoes loaded. There is no indication in the game that tells me which chopper is being reloaded (I noticed the same sort of hevaviour with other mounts in the game and with torpedo tubes). BUT the problem is that at the end of the reload period, both Lynx still show 2 torpedoes. And there is often an erratic ready time that vassilates between 5-8 and 20 some minutes.

What counter-manded my order to load the ASuW missiles on the lynx? How do I prevent that? Can't I have one Lynx with torpedos as a back up sub-hunter and have the other as a ship hunter? I do have the frigate tasked with ASW duty with a task for the Lynx. Is this what is doing it to me? Is it re-tasking both Lynx for the ASW task in the formation editor? Is there not a way to tell the sim that I want to reserve one chopper for other duties? What kind of feedback in the interface is there?

2) Sometimes one of the choppers which I have taken direct control of to go do some over-the horizon sniffing, suddenly clears its flight orders and heads for home. It is not BINGO fuel, it has weapons and sonobouys on board so it is not an "auto-return for fuel or rearm", so why does it take off like that?

3) WIth regards to #2, I have also had ships suddenly all clear the manuallu set way points and all head off in some other direction. What is causing that? I have turned the Staff handles navigation off, but this still happens.

4) Sometimes a ship will just sit and do nothing. I have watched one try to follow the course I set and then flicker between 0 kts and flank kts (the display is flickering as the number change so fast) but it goes no where and it is a devil to get it out of this behaviour.

5) Why do have have to keep re-selected a helo when I want to drop a sonobuoy? I drop one, the helo remains the selected unit and some time later I want to drop another one and it won't do it unless I re-click on the helo to "emphasize" the fact that it is selected. THen the buoys drop fine.

6) If I have data links on, and I have a surface ship locked up on my helo's radar and I select the FFG that launched the helo and target the ship that is on the helo's RADAR, why don't the Harpoon missles track to the ship correctly? Why do they fly off in extremely wrong directions and hit allied ships that are on the port and starboard rear quarters when the targeted ship is off the port bow? The ships that are hit should not even come into the target acquisition cone of the harpoons being fired, correct?

I have recently bought Harpoon UE. I am trying to work out the best version to play (if at all; with Naval War: Arctic Circle out maybe Harpoon has been usurped? or is Naval War not as 'deep' as Harpoon? what about GCB?).
Anyway at first sight, the number of versions of Harpoon is confusing, What should someone start out with (as of April 2012)?
HUE, I have read, has 240 anomalies, ANW slightly less, and 363 is the most reliable, correct ?
Does that mean 363 is bug free, or does it also have 60 or so anomalies ?
(363 does not have a screen resolution that suits my Widescreen laptop, nor can I get the ini installer to install ..(it cannot register 2 files))
So for a novice, like myself, is it going to make a lot of difference if I just use HUE ? With the complete PlayersDB are the anomalies in HUE a) resolved or at least b) tolerable ?
In other words which is the best Harpoon version considering I am using PlayersDB ? (considering i am a novice)

Lastly, manually editing the ini for 363, do I point the Battleset folder to BattleSet or Battlset (with Player'sDB installed)?
Where can I get info about what goes on in the ini with regards PlayersDB ?

The past couple days I've been tentatively slipping a toe back into the waters after a couple years of very little/zero gaming, so I'm just now catching up a bit and breaking radio silence, &c.

I was checking out the tutorials, but then got involved in the AARs--these I found extremely enjoyable. Very interesting to watch someone else playing and stressing out a bit (as opposed to my prematurely balding self). I've never been quite able to fully catch on to the nuances of Harpoon--or get over a feeling of being overwhelmed--but I do believe that I found some tips that hopefully I'll absorb and be able to improve my game somewhat.

Keep it up, shipmate. I've bookmarked the Youtube channel, and will be watching.

When comments life, how are different time-compressions possible in multiplayer sessions?

Sometimes, the videos are made of live sessions. Sometimes, I record the match and then add commentary afterwards.

Time compression in multi-player sessions is handled by the slowest requested speed. If one player wants 1:5second compression while the other wants 1:30second compression, the slower time of 1:5sec is used by the server.

I agree. You can take advantage of game slowing down or pausing when your opponent tries to fire. Sadly, it is only one of many bugs.

Personally, I try not to exploit this game short-coming/limitation. If my opponent has the game slowed down to 1:1 compression, I might ask him if it is deliberate or if he accidentally forgot to speed up. If he tells me that it is intentional, I just continue to play as though I do not know 'something is in the wind'. If that means I unwittingly sail into a torpedo ambush, then so be it. I try to play as in the same manner as I think a real commander might act. Not everyone believes the same and others may take advantage of the 1:1 time compression as a portent of imminent enemy action.

Of course, you can always play tricks on your enemy, too. You can slow down to 1:1 at random points in time to confuse your enemy. However, this tends to frustrate and annoy you as much as it does your opponent since you have to sit around and do nothing, too. :ping:

From what i see in the vid the scenario is highly unbalanced, what is not intrinsically good or bad. But just to put targets among other neutral ships and think you might get away with it is uncreative (from the mission designer).

Would be interesting to see the initial orders of the lybian side and the locations of known threats. Cant find infos for the lybian side in the PTM@Dawn.scn file.
And it would be interesting to read about the intentions/tactics of the lybian side (aka Ryan A.).

It does appear as though the balance of forces favours the Israelis. However, I try to match them up as closely as possible. No scenario designer can promise perfect balance nor, IMO, should they try because in the real world you find elephants and ants. I just try to create fun and challenging situations. This scenario was originally created for Harpoon Classic. I tried to re-make it for H3 by following the Order of Battle as closely as possible as a tribute to the original scenario. :)

I respectfully disagree with your opinion regarding the placement of vessels within a swarm of neutral targets. I believe that this is a valid tactic actually employed in the real world as asymmetric warfare. Moving amongst the fishes is a tactic in land combat. Why not do the same at sea?

You can view the initial Libyan and Israeli orders either with the game or the scenario editor. For your convenience, I will append a copy here. Also, I will show you the initial Libyan fleet dispositions on a map along with their SSM coverage.

No nation in the Middle East, and perhaps not in the world, has a more effective intelligence service than the Israeli Mossad. Quiet and effective, they search out potential problems and deal with them. On occasion, the things they discover are of such magnitude that assistance is needed from other arms of the Israeli military.

Such was the case in mid-February, 1997.

Through the work of a single agent, the Mossad learned of the completion of a quantity of chemical and biological weapons in Libya. These agents of mass destruction were to be shipped to Egypt. No target had been ascribed to the weapons at this point, but the Prime Minister was a cautious man. An "accident" was to be arranged for the shipment.

This scenario is a re-make of a Harpoon Classic scenario from the Harpoon Designers Series II and has been re-made for Harpoon 3 with the consent of AGSI.

A Harpoon3 scenario

On April 14th, 1961, six ships departed a Nicaraguan training camp where they had spent months training with CIA instructors.

Brigade 2506 was to land at the Bay of Pigs in southern Cuba, to overthrow Castro's regime. 16 B-26C Invader medium-range bombers were ready in Central America to support their invasion.

Cuba's army and militia, while numerically strong, were thought to be poorly motivated and likely to switch sides when the invasion took place. Cuba's air force was poorly equipped, had low servicability, and would be destroyed on the ground by the rebel B-26s and by US strikes on the main airbases. After all, it was the CIA who had organised the invasion.

In reality, President Kennedy had inherited the operation from his predecessors and, while unwilling to pull the plug, he severely limited the support that could be given and personally ordered a veto against air strikes on Cuban airbases.

My orders were to gather my scatter ships, conduct reconnaissance on the landing site, destroy army units defending the site, and bring the amphibious ships safely to the Bay of Pigs so that they can unload over four hours.

I ordered my ships to rendezvous at RefPoint Zulu and launched a C-47 Dakota and an A-26K Invader to conduct the beach reconnaissance. The ships employed varied speeds in hopes of arriving at the same time. Even though I only used the Happy Valley base, the multiple rebel bases would (hopefully) prevent the enemy from knowing which axis of approach I would choose. The American CVBG Essex was in communication with me, but not under my command.

The Invader arrived over the beachhead and started a low-level search. It was soon shot down by an undetected enemy unit. I did not even know if it was an aircraft or a ground unit. The Dakota suffered the same fate. This was already proving to be a tough scenario.

A group of Invaders flew in and attacked a torpedo boat detected by the destroyed Dakota. Since I had no other mobile assets to protect the landing ships, I ordered them to attack the boat. She was such a small craft that I had a difficult time pin-pointing her location. When I finally did, the Invaders saved their heavier bomb ordnance and strafed the little boat into oblivion with their massed machine guns; performing not unlike their role in World War II.

The invaders moved on towards Cuba. Meanwhile, the an enemy A-26 Invader was detected flying over the CVBG Essex! I classified it Hostile to help the AI prosecute it. Evidently, it the AA gunners were taken by surprise as not a shot was fired. However, a flight of four Skyhawks did launch and shot down the snooper.

The flight of Invaders conducted reconnaissance, detected elements of the Cuban 3rd Brigade, and attacked with only minimal success. CVBG Essex launched a flight of four Skyhawks for Close Air Support to attack the 1st company. They scored hits, but lost two in the effort. The infantry company was capable of sustaining 500 damage points. In ANW, an attacker has to deliver a significant amount of damage in a short interval in order to overwhelm a ground unit. Otherwise, the unit miraculously regenerates totally! Therefore, I had to gather every surviving A-26K Invader and load them with the most potent ordnance: Mk82 bombs and Mk77 napalm (a.k.a. Snake and Nape)

A flight of 14 Invaders was launched. This had the potential to deliver 700 points of damage. Hopefully, it would be sufficient to overwhelm the infantry company. On their approach, they flew over a gunboat Jose Moran! Compared to the virtually unarmed landing ships, this was like a dreadnought. Therefore, it had to be taken out!

The flight leader immediately led an attack on the gunboat. As before, they reserved the heavy ordnance for the ground units and dove for a strafing run. The amount of firepower delivered was tremendous with the massed .50 cal machine guns, but the gunboat fought back bravely under the assault. The gunboat exploded, but not before killing one of her attackers.

The landing ships made their approach to the beach only to come under fire from hidden shore batteries. Marope took serious damage as they all turned to flee. Marope did not get out of range quickly enough and fires aboard consumed her. The flotilla thought it had escaped the coastal defences when another ship started taking fire. They ran, again. Another ship died by fire while a third sustained significant damage.

The Invaders re-armed and returned to sweep the beaches, again. This time, they located a heavy flak unit, an artillery group, and two platoons of T-55 main battle tanks. The deadliest units were the flak and artillery batteries. They died first under a flurry of bombs and napalm. The enemy armour was hammered into submission through strafing attacks.

Once clear of apparent opposition, the landing ships re-entered the bay and completed their landing operations. Victory was granted. It was a close-run operation as the loss of one more vessel would have doomed the invasion.

I have installed the last version of the PlayersDB for ANW, HUE and H3-363 without problem.
I have installed also the file with the "ANW and HUE images" ... the installed worked fine but I have a doubt:
- the installer put these images under the directory DATABASES/PLAYERSDB/PICS
but normally the images are under the directory RESOURCES/DBPICS
so my question is simple ... I have to move the images under this directory or they are found also under where the installer put them?

Under the HDSII-NACV Battleset I'm trying the Alpha Strike mission. I stink. :D :D

I can't even get planes near the peninsula without getting shot up. I've tried recon...I've tried having F-18's with HARMS...nothing works. I realize I am learning. But the map isn't displaying targets on the peninsula anymore. Yet my planes are being destroyed. I've had them turn on radars to attempt to find the targets...but I don't see anything. Aye...I am lost with this game right now.

How am I supposed to become an Admiral like that?

After-Action Report for the Fulda: Frontier of Freedom scenario between Michael Orwick (a.k.a. OJsDad) and Herman Hum for v2.02a FlashPoint Campaigns: Red Storm.

This video after-action report was originally planned as a joint effort between opponents to show both sides of the same battle, but real life circumstances prevented Michael from recording his NATO orders. Thanks for the information - I think I am underestimating the power of this simulation - the graphics etc must be deluding me because I just didn't realize it modeled threats up to this detail. From what you are saying, it obviously does this to an incredible degree.

I didn't realize you prepared walk through videos of scenarios either, whilst the mission was successful, I would still be interested to see a walk through if its on offer?

Finally just another quick one - I'm at work at the moment, but for when I get home - is there a plotting tool I can use on the subs to draw nm ranges around them to remind me of the 150% threat areas etc - couldn't find a way to do it last time I checked?

"I just purchased Harpoon Ultimate Edition, largely on the strength of an article on SimHQ which I can't seem to link to. Granted, that discusses a beta version of the game, but the interface does not seem to have changed appreciably. I have always been interested in games with depth and complexity, and Harpoon definitely seems to offer that. i've also been blind since birth.
I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how I ought to proceed. Much of the information provided by the game is textual in nature, but the map is also obviously important. As that article points out, I can't set courses for groups easily.
Given that someone obviously has been able to play the game and understand what was happening, I feel like it should be possible. I'm just not quite sure how to begin.
If anybody has suggestions, or tips on how to handle things in an automated fashion, or what have you, it would be greatly appreciated.

The BOL problem does not appear when the game is run with WinXP. I also tried to run HUE v3.11.1.0 under WinXP SP3 emulation mode and it did not solve the problem. The same symptoms appeared under WinXP emulation mode.

I believe that there is a glitch or bug with Win7, but there is a work-around solution. Hope it helps.

[Edit] After a series of online meetings and tests with Poor Old Spike, the work-around solution does help, but the game _must be installed under Administrator-level privileges_. Spike had to uninstall and re-install the game under Administrator access in order to use the Minimize/Maximize work-around solution.

I've started to familiarise myself with Harpoon 3. Having played a bit of Fleet Command and Global Conflict Blue in the past helps to understand some of the basic concepts of course but the Youtube channel is good for getting a view on how to handle things in Harpoon.

Is there a possibility to measure ranges between contacts or arbitrary locations on the map in Harpoon (3)?
In the Sonalyst games and simulations you can easily do this with the 'R' hotkey but I was not able to find a similar feature in Harpoon...

There is a Range-Finder function in H3. To activate it, use the NumPad5 hotkey. Then, click on any two points of the map and the range between the points is shown in the message log window.

You might want to install the PlayersDB before you try the tutorials. When the tutorials were re-written for compatibility with the PlayersDB, several problems were fixed. If you run the Official Tutorials, you may encounter them unknowingly.

Thanks for the tip, I installed the PlayersDB after my previous reply. The Mission Editor tutorial crashed when assigning the Tomcats to the AAW patrol mission so I disabled PlayersDB temporarily.

Now I'm starting the Falklands battleset.

Harpoon version is 3.6.3 with PlayersDB v19.01.30 running on Windows 10 64-bit

My steps to reproduce are:
1. Load tutorial "Mission editor"
2. Drag-select reference points 3, 4, 5, 6
3. Create mission from the 'Mission' pull-down menu
4. Rename the mission to 'AAW patrol 1'
5. Select mission type as 'Patrol AAW'
6. Check 'Edit now'
7. Uncheck '1/3 Rule'
8. Select RAD Emissions as 'Act'
9. Press 'Ok'
10. In the 'Edit Missions' window, press 'Add AC' button -> Harpoon crashes with prompt about unhandled exception at some address.

Thank you for such precise instructions on your steps to the crash. When dealing with bugs, there is no such thing as too much information.

I tested with my WinXP Service Pack 3 32-bit computer and another computer with Win7 Pro 64-bit system and managed to successfully advance to the next step without a problem.

Sadly, I have no access to any systems with Win10 and thus am able to fully replicate your crash.

Are you able to continue with the v3.6.3 game tutorials using the official databases? Have you tried the other game versions (ANW v3.9.4 or HUE v3.11) and encountered the same crash? The PlayersDB is available for all three H3 versions.

I do notice a small discrepancy between our two images. Your image shows "LESSON VII" while my image depicts "Lesson 07 Using Mission Editor". "LESSON VII" is the manner in which the original tutorial scenarios for the official databases were named. When the tutorial was re-written for compatibility with the PlayersDB, it was re-named more extensively.

The sub-folder 'Original Tutorial' contains all the original tutorial scenarios written for the official (buggy) Harpoon3 game. When we were given permission to re-write the tutorial scenarios for compatibility with the PlayersDB, I did not think it 'right/proper' to over-write the original scenarios. Thus, I put all original tutorial scenarios into the sub-folder named, "Original Tutorial" and the revised PlayersDB tutorial scenarios were put into the sub-folder named, "Tutorials".

If you load the tutorials from the "Load Battleset" function (which lists all the tutorials available), then it immediately draws the PlayersDB scenario from the correct folder. However, I suspect that you used the "Load File" function and went directly into the "Original Tutorial" sub-folder and grabbed the specific file that was written with the official (buggy) database. This would cause a scenario-database mis-match error. It still should not have crashed, but I can understand how this could have occurred. Regardless, as long as you managed to get it to work and am happy with the results, that is all that matters.
