...thinking of planning a trip to Laboe to see U 995 maybe in the spring next year. i want to take my two children and i am wondering has anyone made this trip before from England (with children?) where i live. is it best to fly or go by coach? is there a recognised route to be taken or is it all a bit ad hoc?
i have no idea, but i thought asking here first might give me some good advice. i would be very thankful for anyones thoughts or ideas on this - cheers.

The only potentially helpful advice I can offer is to bring a camcorder or other such device. It's really difficult to get good perspective in tight quarters from photos.

Best wishes on your trip! Hopefully you'll find a day/time that won't be too crowded.

I went to the US Navy Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut several years ago. The missus and I were driving home from a conference in Rhode Island and made it there just as the tour of the Nautilus closed. I was disappointed that we had missed the tour and we were ready to leave when we were advised that the museum CO authorized us to tour the boat. That kind of courtesy and professionalism is rare these days.

Here is some info, if you did not know already:

I'd fly from England to Hamburg, that is not so far away then...

Flag, if you don't mind driving on the correct lane of the road, you should rent a car at Hamburg's airport. It will be about 50 miles to drive, and you do not depend on other things like trains or buses.

Laboe is an area which is not easy to reach, if not by car...

OK, there is a train from Hamburg to Kiel and a bus from Kiel to Laboe, that would take about two hours, but you will not want that...

Flag,

to get the most out of it, here is what I would do:

- Go to Hamburg (http://www.ham.airport.de/en/index.phtml) by flight, rent a car (make sure you can leave it in Bremen)

- Drive by car to Laboe, visit U 995 (http://www.deutscher-marinebund.de/u995_geschichte_english.htm)

- Drive to Bremerhaven, visit Wilhelm Bauer (http://www.u-boot-wilhelm-bauer.de/englisch.php) there

- Drive to Bremen Airport (http://www.airport-bremen.de/en/start/) to get back to England, leave car there

- Post a lot of stuff here

- done!

I just found out that it's only 5 hours driving from where I live... I may meet you guys there!

Will be a good chance to exercise the car on the excellent German highways. So it may actually be just 4 hours driving. Or 5 minutes, with TC on. :88)

Where are you in Holland?

Down in the south, Eindhoven region. I can be across the border quick enough, Germany is only 20 minutes away by car.

Ah, a lot closer to the sea. I miss that, sometimes. I like the sea a lot, but hardly ever go there nowadays... No time, no time.

Don't do it. The game will kill you and you won't find out until it's over. :O:

But do go. You'll have a very mini Subsim meeting. Then you can post pictures of the boat and each other! :D

Drove up there from Stuttgart four years ago, I always traveled with my Truck, Kayak & Mountain bike. So Hotels I dodged. Funny enough. I threw my tent up on the beach under the bow and broke camp at dawn(Very quiet area) Keil is a nice town with plenty of Hotels and is about 15 min from the boat, there is a RV camp site further down the beach by the U-Boat memorial. I don't advise paddling out in the bay though. nearly got rammed by a tanker doing 15kts, Ha Ha. Also about 1.5-2 hrs is Bremerhaven and the XXI moored there. you can check em both out!
PS there is also a few of the bunker left in Keil bay as well.
