While playing this game I have noticed that the watch system which seems to automatically rotate crew members while cruising starts to go awry when i do anything with it. They get fatigued very quickly and then certain tired crew keep getting placed on watch and it becomes so upended that I have to tend to it manually. I've also noticed it is sometimes very difficult to get the gun crew to engage a target using the iorders from the watch officer ie 'Target nearest ship/nearest warship/aim for hull' etc. Has anyone else noticed this?
I am playing the game completely unmodded.

For me they are firing at the ships. But even if i have a trained deck gunner they are shooting everywhere and SOMETIMES they actually hit the ship. :nope::shifty::x So i use the gun mostly by myself.

Thats what i am talking about :) You hit it :D So i didn't have a trained gunner anymore. i rather have a trained repairteam and torpedocrew. But i am glad that the enemy gunners are just as blind as my own gunner. :03: But they have the excuse that an U-Boot is an small target. But how can i miss a C2 Cargo on 1500 meters??? :06:

It's also a whole lot more fun shooting the deck gun yourself, especially in GWX3 with the sub and target bobbing up and down with the waves.
I had one time, and only once, that I hit a trawler below the waterline amidships with my deck gun (HE) and it promptly exploded, split in half and sunk. Talk about lucky! My crew and I were stunned!
I like to take out the engine first, then hit under the water line on both sides of the ship. My logic is that the more compartments I can hit, the harder time they're going to have to control the flooding. It's also great fun. :arrgh!:

Working the deck gun is one of the highlights of the game for me. I envision myself saying "Fire on the up roll!" like some old sea captain in the days of wooden ships and iron men. :O:

Well i had a battle with two cargo ships which attacked me with their deckguns. My own gunner was firing too but he didn't really hit the ships. The tracers were going to the left in the ocean and to the right but not one hit landed at the ship. So they had enough time to call reinforcements and just a few minutes later two or three Sunderland planes arrived and were throwing bombs at my ship. :shifty:

Time to CRASH DIVE !!! JazzJR Quickly. :o Did you take any damage from ships ?
If it's a seaman some can be good but, most are recruit level. That's up to Ship Modder or GWX and Year.me thinks. :yep:
If it's manned by Military, LOOK OUT. Bad News :dead:
Hope, JazzJR you were lucky on year and who was manning their Guns. :salute:

My ship was damaged almost every part was beginning to flood. But thanks to my trained crew i was able to repair and dive at 70meters. Going to slow speed and always changed the course. Planes where still dropping bombs but didn't hit. The enemy ships were manned by military i think. Because they landed some hits and destroyed the topedo tubes 1 and 2. I was able to fire the gun myself long enough so that atleast one of the both ships sunk.

Here's something to think about. Naval gunnery is a very imprecise science. Author Peter Padfield, in his history Guns At Sea, likens it to shooting a pistol at a ping-pong ball rolling across a mantle while sitting across the room in a rocking chair being rocked at random by someone else.
A C2 is much larger than a u-boat, which makes it a bigger target, but also makes it a more stable gun platform. A submarine rolls and pitches - a lot. Also 1500 meters is almost a mile, and that's a long way. On the other hand he shouldn't be hitting you very well at that distance either.
All of that said, if you read the reports the reality was that u-boats didn't engage in gun battles much. When a merchant opened fire the u-boat almost always would dive and not be seen again.
