Do we need a special forum thread to view journals ?

Don't understand what you're asking :06:

If I can get working what I really want to do with the journal it will be awesome....ability to add pictures to it in game....

What i meant was does the forum need a new sub heading called SH5 journals .
So there would be
Silent hunter 5
SH5 Mods workshop
SH5 captains journals

would it be possible to have a choice that the journal editor when exporting to text could change the long lat coords to the format that google earth can search .
For example
07:09 Navigator: Calculated position is Lat: 54° 19' N Long: 10° 9' E

You can search google earth using
N 54° 19' E 10° 9'

People might like to copy and paste the coords into google earth to see where the area is .

Sure can. I'll make the change and send to you for testing

It sounds like a good idea to me. I expect the likelyhood of getting it approved will hinge on the number of people who will want to use it. If a large number want it, it should happen. If there are only eight or ten, maybe not.

That said, the Enigma Flotilla forum for SH3 is still there, and I don't think it's getting used very much. I could be wrong about that, of course.

thanks mate :salute:

Just finished coding and testing it. That took some effort to do but it was fun

Under View there is a new entry: Google Earth coordinates. If checked then map coordinates will be displayed in the Google Earth style. When exporting a single day or saving the journal as txt file and Google Earth Coordinates is checked then they will be written in this format to the file also.

In the real world this is never going to happen ;)
4 and more hours with "ahead flank speed" will completely crash and kill your diesel-engine. And i assume you are talking about several days to travel with ahead flank-speed, right?

For more realistic gameplay we need a little program that increases the probability to destroy/damage the diesel engine the longer we use ahead-flank speed at a time.

07:09 Navigator: Calculated position is Lat: 54° 19' N Long: 10° 9' E

In the real world this is also never going to happen
Below, at entry "2033" you can see how much time it takes to calculate a position-fix (out of 3 stars) for the U-483 navigator. It took him 20 minutes.

"2033, 3-star shot with sextant at twilight (= abendbesteck) with stars REGULUS, SPICA, DUBHE"
"2053, the drift (= Versetzung) from DR-Position to the 3-star-fix was 9,2 sm with arc 269°"

The diary-possibilities, created by TDW, are awesome. I use it always. But i think it is not necessary that we need an extra sub-forum like "SH5 - captain logs".
Just give us what SH3 has, a thread named "Tell us what you are upto in your current campaign"

Those 2 lines are misleading you .
It actually takes some time to do a celestial plot in game .
I guess it should say
07:09 Navigator: Has calculated our current position...
07:09 Navigator: Calculated position is Lat: 54° 19' N Long: 10° 9' E

If anyone is interested I can update my SH4 report widget that nobody used to work with this :D. I can make it generate a historical look-alike type of document on the fly, based on the contents of a post.

See the links in my signature to see what I mean.

The edit box in game won't let me 'add' text to it. You have to type it. Now what I can do is place a checkbox on the edit window that when checked will automatically add the text above to whatever you type. How's that :06:

That would be really cool. I had a heck of time after being in game for a few hours and taking lots of screen shots, trying to figure out what screen shots went with what days. Be nice to take a screen shot and have it put a ingame time stamp on it.

I love the journal! Its adding a new element of game play.

Maybe TDW could add it as a plugin in order to work offline For the online version, the on-the-fly conversion seems more suitable, as you don't have to upload anything and just use your own post.

By the way. Your diary-tool for SH4 and your Google-tool for SH4 looks fantastic. Have not figured out how the diary tool works in detail though.

Thank you for the photos and link! I will try to use them for BdU Online.

The basic idea of the diary formater:
1. Post your patrol log on the forum, in a somewhat standardized way.
2. Get the number (id) of your post.
3. Access a special link with the previous id which in turn reads back your post and generates the formated document.
