So yesterday Gadhafi’s forces fired a scud missile that missed its likely target, the city of Brega, by about 50 miles. How’d this happen? Not the miss, the Soviet-designed Scud’s have been around since the 50s and aren’t exactly prescision-guided weapons. No, how does Gadhafi still have stockpiles of them? I know they’re mounted on mobile launchers and that we had a hell of a time finding Saddam Hussein’s real ones during the ’91 Gulf War (he used dummy missiles to confuse coalition pilots and targeteers) but still, NATO has owned the skies over Libya for months now. We’ve got drones and a bunch of other recce aircraft scouring the nation for targets. A Scud and it’s launcher are pretty big objects and you’d think we’d have the intel on were they were marshalled and the locations of their possible dispersal and launch sites.

Find me a building big enough, and I can hide a SCUD missile launcher.

Maybe the fact that it missed the (assumed by us) target by that much (even for a Scud) was a "hasty" launch because in fact the skies are onwed by NATO. The alternative explanation is that NATO coverage is likely heavier along the coastline where the battles are going on, so if the actual launching took place somewhere in the central or southern part of the country NATO reaction could be "slow", but the crew operating the missile maybe not experienced or properly trained :hmmm:.

If I were launching it under the same conditions I'd drive up, roughly aim, fire, and GTFO of there - I'd miss too. No hanging around. :o

I'm surprised he's dared move them out from undercover. He must be getting desperate.
Wonder if he has any chem or bio warheads for them? That could be a hindrance to the rebels advance...

So where exactly did it hit?

I think you'll find the Libyans will say that was the intended target :DL

I doubt it, filled and unfilled munitions were the first to go, the remains of the stockpile of chemicals was supposed to be gone as well by this summer, but everyone pulled out when the French made the civil war official.

Well, that's something at least. Against our forces I wouldn't be so worried, we've got the gear, but against irregulars...it'd be...yeah. :nope:
