Ahoy all,
I am new here and to the game. Just completed the training academy and two patrols in SH3. I sank two small merchant ship in the 2nd patrol, yay :)
Does anyone have a configuration for the xbox controller for PC ? I'd like to use my xbox controller to run most keyboards commands but I struggle with the speed. Is there a maybe a keyboard shortcut which raises or lowers the speed ? I see 10 different keys for the speed but I do not have enough buttons on the controller for all these.
Even better would be if anyone has already configured an entire controller :)
Cheers,
OH

Sorry never used one myself, but hopefully someone will be along shortly who can help out. In the meantime I'll just wish you a warm welcome and happy hunting! :sunny:

Sorry I'm no help either. I've never even heard of doing that, much less thought about it.

If nothing else helps you could program the controller to use only two or three engine (speed) settings. 1/3 ahead and Full ahead would be something useful, maybe the minimum speed ahead too. At times in stock SH3 one can't use keyboard commands anyways, because there is no preset key for 1 knot forward (silent enough) or 8 knots forward (most economical speed for a type VII). There might be mods that change the speed settings, though.
Another solution would be downloading a keymapper program from the Downloads section and look though all the commands if there are commands for slower and faster.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I do like the game a lot so far (and apart from Seafox on the C64 console I never played any submarine games) but it seems my flatmates do not like it as I tend to loudly curse any enemy ship which was hit by a torpedo. :DL

Yay, thank you. It is rather narrow on board to be honest. I went through the Naval Academy with a decent uboat and now started the first career to find myself on a much smaller uboat. There is a bigger one for 2500 renown now but I spent my renown on a decent crew already. Some FAQ said the crew is the most important thing ... we'll see ...

Good idea, I can configure the pad which has eight directions so I only have to leave out 2 speed settings. Which two speed settings do you use least often ?

Cool, at least I learned something about speed now, I already wondered if being very slow is silent enough or if I better have to stop in order to remain undetected. Same for 8 knots as most economic but I have switched off the limited diesel ayway. I might use 8 knots however if that is also the most environment-friendly speed. That might make up for the oil slicks I leave in the North Sea. :DL

OK, another day, 6 enemies sunk today. I was checking the forum on some help with the crew and I found a few interesting entries on skilling them but I can not find the pefect ratios. Does anyone know a good ratio between seamen and senior seaman ? Maybe one third senior seamen ? If they are all senior seaman, noone does the "dirty tasks", correct ? Same question would be for petty officers and officers ? What would be the best percentage to mix them ?
Another thing : I dismissed a seaman who had two patrols accomplished and now I want him back. Are the dismissed guys in a "pool" from where I can rehire them so after a few months I have experienced seamen on shore or are they "gone". I can now only see crew without patrols but as far I remember he was in the selection after I dismissed him.
Thanks a lot for your help, very appreciated.

Hmm.. I think I already answered, but it seems the answer is not here... Well, about the speed. Drop two of the backward settings. Use minimum backwards, medium backwards and maximum speed backwards.
And yes we have to be environment-friendly here. In fact, this is the only reason I sink them ships! The darned allies are polluting all the seas with those diesel guzzling huge ships of theirs! It's a torpedo down their polluting throats and down those un-ecolike ships go, saving the Atlantic from environmentally unsound shipping policies. They even zigzag, which means they will take a longer time to get where they are going, using more fuel too. SINK 'EM ALL! - to make the Atlantic waters all clean and peaceful again :arrgh!:

I think you pay too much attention to your crewmen. If they don't behave, order them to put on their parade suits and make them stand in attention on the deck for a couple of days. (I hear there's even a mod for this.) If there's any lip after that, it's off to the Russian front for a crewman or two. So, if you think there's someone who deserves a promotion or a medal go for it! Reward good behaviour, punish bad behaviour, it's as simple as that. Crew management is not rocket science - save that for calculating torpedo solutions.
I wouldn't take that guy you dismissed back. It's bad leadership first doing this, then taking it back. I'm sure there's someone else on the roster with close enough qualities. If not, train him yourself. You sink 6 ships a day and get a ton of promotions and medals. After 4 or 5 missions you'll have a veteran crew with all the qualifications you need.
