Swedish Newspaper DN (Dagens Nyheter) has on its website published 23 pictures from North Korea. They are quite interesting since they show stuff from the everyday life of the citizens, including studying at the Kim Il Sung University, visiting an amusement park, etc. Things not often seen published from one of the most enclosed countries in the world.

I suggest you take a look, I don't think you need to learn Swedish to fully understand what's happening on the pictures, they speak for themselves so to speak.

Is it possible he only had access to the 'upmarket' areas? :hmmm:

The only way to access those other areas is GoogleEarth, if you like overhead views of prison camps that is.

It's quite sad how those people live in the side you'll probally never get to see apart from some of the sneaky recorded tapes that cross the borders from time to time.

THIS (http://kimjongillookingatthings.tumblr.com/) fine website posts pictures from North Korea on a daily basis.

On a more serious note, I find my curiosity about North Korea growing every time I hear about them. In our age of hyper communication and global connection there is something actually disturbing about such a closed state existing within spitting distance of two first world nations like S. Korea and Japan.

On an even more serious note, I see the two Koreas are shooting at each other again:

Yes, the worlds attention is not focussed on the two atm but the situation remains unchanged.

A while ago, I saw some impressive pictures from a russian guy who made a journey through NK. Unfortunately I can't find the link anymore.
While searching for it though, I found a site that has the pics from Biggles' link in high-res:

I think the whole place looks rather dismal, and yes I think we are seeing the lives of the few that are wealthy, politicians, business men etc.

Somewhat reminds me of Pripyat.

Either way it isn't much of a vacation destination.

Also...

Because what average citizen DOESN'T carry a brightly colored door while prancing down the street?

Interesting - in most cases, the other folks standing in the pictures with Dear Leader are looking a little... tense.

Sun lamps for the people! The urban shots are so bleak it reminds me of winter. :dead:

Pic #16: hardly a light on in any of the windows. Do people actually live in those hi-rises? It all looks like an empty facade, not counting the spark of life on the street below.

Aside: Now I know what I'll tell my kids if/when I have them. Any time they act up I'll show them pictures of North Korea's cityscapes and tell them that if they don't behave I'll send them off to stay with Uncle Kim.

Anyone recommend any good books about North Korea? I feel like I should really know something about them before they finally go full on mental.

Looks to be Pyong Yang (sp?) and military installations. Maybe a port here and there.

I think the most interesting part of this is that you can actually see a majority of the border line extremely crisply. It's like when you're a kid and you think the equator is physical rather than mathematical, only this really is physical.

You can follow the trace of the DMZ to the north of the bright spot of light that is Seoul and environs - there's an almost continuous line of light that runs to the east(ish) from there, from the lights along the DMZ.

They'll just have to eat boiled grass like everyone else. :hmmm:

Really now... even I am not that cruel. How much food can a gallon of low grade fuel oil buy over there? :D

True. But I shudder to think what would happen to any North Korean caught with a telescope in such a paranoid regime.

I had a similar thought while typing that out. Being so far removed from whatever hell the place might be allows some room for happy thoughts, though. :sunny:

No sucker holes in the sky, and no lights for hundreds of miles. Ooooh yeah! Break out the Dobbie. :D
