It seems to be possible:

Getting it to run will probably be no walk in the park, so better be ready to ask advice from some Linux support forum. I'm sure there will be lots of people who'll help you out, if need be, but it does seem like most people in this forum use Windows.
If I was any younger I would probably be trying to use Linux as well, but as most of my PC time is now on spent gaming, I don't have the energy to learn the stuff I would need to know to get the games working - for me it's enough of a hassle trying to get games like SH3 or Il-2 working in Windows 7 :O: I hope you get the game working in Linux :yeah:

Thanks Sublynx, As soon as Linux sorts out its compatability issues with windows software, its gonna eat Microsoft for brekkie (well maybe not but theyre worried :D ) Its Quicker, slicker, better looking, no viruses. Im converted, i may get hold of a cheap PC just for SH3 though cos i really dont want to go back to windows.

I used to be a Linux fan, ran three different OSs, then realized:
unfortunately, if Linus had anything to offer that was a real threat to windows,
It would have been out by now :damn:
But! If I recall, I ran into someone recently who runs SH3 on wine, lemme dig around tomorrow and see if I can't find them :D
Hang in there, bro!:sunny:

Surprisingly, I found that stock SH3 ran fine under Wine, right out of the box - no futzung about required. Also no problem with the NYGM super mod, but no way with GWX (or the bigger mods like MFM or the animated sub-pens).
Ran as fast as it did on the WinXP side of my box, but graphics were not as good due to limited support for the drivers under Wine. Main graphics problem was that smoke/fire/spray did not show up under some circumstances. I understand there's a fix for that if you custom-compile Wine.

Your disk won't be writable (or even a Linux file-system) so you won't be able to change attributes.
If you look at autorun.inf (a text file) it will tell you what file autorun wants to execute, just run that file directly for the same result. executing a Win32 command on my distro (Slackware 13) automatically passes that command off to Wine. Can't say how it's done in Mint.
Also, I was running the version of SHIII under linux that I had already installed on my Windows partition. I didn't try to install it under Linux. winehq (Sublynx's link above) is the go-to place for advice and accounts.
I guess I'll revise my assessment from "no futzing about" to "some futzing about, but not much - for Linux".

Yeah, I think of my WinXP partition as my game console.
I run SH3 under wine on Fedora 15 quite successfully. I even added GWX3 Gold and SH3 Commander, which all run fine. It didn't take all that much special effort, if I remember correctly. I can't check now because I'm at work but I'll get back to you when I am home. As to the no smoke and no visible fire, yes there is a bug with that.
I promised to get back to this thread, so here it is. I checked what I did to get it to work and I was surprised at how little effort it took, really.
Very important, make sure you get a recent version of wine! From wine version 1.3, it should work.
Next, install the game as you would in Windows, by running the installer from the DVD. I am running the EMEA version, patched to 1.4b. The DVD should mount automatically, but I am not familiar with Linux Mint, so I'm not sure how it works there. I have had success with Fedora and openSUSE. Install the Windows Media 9 codecs too.
Next, install the patch if your game is not pre-patched.
An icon should have been created automatically for the game. From that, you can launch it and it will run.
I set up some options in winecfg to allow SH3 to run a little more smooth.
I set wine to act as if it is Windows XP
I set it to emulate a virtual desktop with 1024X768 pixels, because SH3 can't cope with my native resolution. That means SH3 runs in a window, but that doesn't bother me. I am actually pursuing a convoy as I am writing this, which is not possible in full screen resolution.
I added GWX 3 and SH3 Commander the same way as I did on Windows. No special settings were required.
There are two glitches which are annoying, but I can live with them. YMMV:
There are no visible fires or smoke when looking up close, only when zoomed far out. And I do mean far! This is actually more of an issue with the SH3 engine than with wine itself, but it makes the game less enjoyable.
You can't actually launch the game from within SH3 Commander. If you launch it that way, it will complain about not being able to initialize the 3d engine. However, starting SH3 directly after that, it says it's loaded from SH3 Commander and any options are carried over. A minor annoyance.
I am currently in a career, in my 10th patrol and the game has been very smooth, no crashes or anything. If you absolutely need fires and smoke, stay on Windows, otherwise come join us on Linux, where all the cool kids play.... :arrgh!:

:sign_yeah:
And thanks for the tip on SH-Commander! Guess I don't have enough oomph for GWX, ah well, NYGM rocks too.
There is even a fix for the smoke issue, If you're willing to alter some values (http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20047) in the Wine source code and recompile. Love open source!

Yes, I knew about the patch for fire and smoke but since the OP asked if it was even possible to run SH3 under wine, I thought that recompiling wine from scratch might be a bit too far. :03:
Plus, I've read that the patch has produced different results for different people, so I thought I'd not mention it.
For those interested, I wrote up a little "how to" on how to apply the patch for the wine source code and then compile wine yourself so you get fire, smoke and spray effects in wine under Linux.
You can find it here: http://beris.nl/jb/?p=306

Wow! Very thorough and clear tutorial:salute:
I'll give it a try after I've completed upgrading my distro.
Not sure if it is a tutorial...more like a "works for me" kind of write-up. :D
But I do hope that other people have some benefit from it. Let me know how you fare and if you run into any problems. I may be able to update that post so that it becomes more useful.
One odd thing that I have noticed is that my self-compiled version of wine seems less compatible with pulseaudio. Another is that smoke isn't really black, more like a dull grey but I may have to fiddle about with some graphics settings. Here is an idea of how it looks on my machine:
Without the patch: no smoke, no wake visible, no spray effects.

With the patch, things look like this:

Better, but not quite there yet...

Very nice. Looks much better IMHO. I'll definitly post back here when I try it - but that'll be a while due to RL.
...One odd thing that I have noticed is that my self-compiled version of wine seems less compatible with pulseaudio.
You may well already know this... $ ./configure --help will give you a list of every available compile option - and often the default settings for those options. There may be some pulseaudio specific settings that need to be explicitly enabled.
