Greetings folks, although I have long been an owner of SH3, I have never go online with questions. So here is my first:

Is it possible to encounter battlegroups in the career mode? It is December 1940, and I have been sinking ships like crazy (my realism is pretty low, no I'm not that good). But although I have been on 13 missions so far, and I patrol quite close to Scapa, Flow, Loch Ewe, and even Dover, I have yet to see anything beyond a destroyer warship besides one light cruiser.

Thanks to any and all help! As my captain is the leading sub ace by some multiplicative factor (4x?), I would really start hunting the big guys if I can, and I do not care at all if that kills me :DL

Thanks.

Are you running any mods? I haven't played SH3 un-modded in a while but I think that I had ran into a couple Illustrious Fleet Carriers before. And it is only 1940, these were the "good times" for the U-Boats. Things started getting ugly a while down the road. Escorts will get smarter, and I think you will even see more task forces as the war progresses.

Welcome aboard!

Are you using any super mod like GWX , NYGM or LSH?
If so , then yes , you will find big warships either in combined task forces or in convoys and in some rare occasions flaptops sailing alone.
Possibilites are better at grids AN11 or BF42 or CG95 at the Giblartar straits.

I am not running any mods. You'll have consider me ultra-lightweight as far as investing non-gaming time into my games. I usually just hope they work well enough out of the box. That's why I even waited so long to ask this question (about 7 airplanes came at me from the west and I just went that way in search of their [potential] floating base). I of course know mods will greatly help, but who has the time to research which ones to install?!

Anyway, I'm quite surprised by the quick responses, I just bookmarked the page to come back to. I was reading the noob guide (thankfully I know the game pretty well so most of that I already knew), and then *BOOM* you guys already responded.

So what are the best mods to get? I am adept at manipulating game files and the like, so installation won't be a problem so long as I know which one (of the many) is most helpful. Also, my father leeches my copy for multiplayer coop (I don't feel bad as we both bought SH4, so one shared copy of SH3 seems fair) -- will mods allow us to keep playing together whenever it is Das Boot night again?

...
I will boldy sneak in one more question: I bought SH3 and SH4 bundled, but I have actually never installed SH4. I just always preferred the Atlantic side of things for submarine warfare (although I was a big fan of Silent Service, oh the good ol' days...). Have I made a mistake? The only thing I heard for sure is that SH5 was a real bust :wah:

My sincerest thanks, once more!

SH4 Gold comes with the u-boat add-on installed and ready to go. With Operation Monsun you get an excellent campaign which only lacks some of the eye candy of SH3 supermods and has a much better operating system. But because of those same supermods I still play SH3 as well. Both are excellent.

It's largely a matter of personal taste. For me SH3 is the 'better' sim for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is multiple boat types available in the Atlantic theatre whereas SH4 only has one.
