 First of all I know that I don't have to except the patrol grid that BDU assigns me and can change this assigned grid via SH III Commander, but I don't and won't do that. I except all orders as is. But sometimes I think Donetz is got it out for me. Case in point. I was assigned to grid AN81, its Nov. 1940 (still early, I know), and running GWX 3.0. But damn, AN81 has a max depth of between 24 to 28 meters, full of mines, has a group of 3 destroyers and a rouge destroyer buzzing around the surface like I just ran over a Yellow Jacket's nest with the lawn mower,(I've actually done that). For realism purposes at the end of the 24 hour patrol time, I roll dice to simulate a radio message, for additional patrol time in that grid, which, thank heavens, I rolled a 4 this time, (4 more days). With 5 destroyers, aircraft, mines and 28meters of water below me, I had no time to look for merchants. I was playing defence the whole time. After a total of about 48 hours, as soon as it got dark. I had to bug out at full speed ! The safety of my command comes first.

Well, AN81 is the North Sea, after all. Realistically you would be expected to stay in the assigned grid for at least two weeks. I wait that long and only roll a die if I haven't seen any enemy shipping in that time. Then I only change grids on a 1, and it's an adjacent grid anyway.

You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Sailor Steve , I remember a list, of say, "personal realism rules" that you play by. I play by most of them, because there great. I wasn't too sure about how long you stayed in your grid, and when you rolled the dice. Now I'm feel'n like a weenie. I'm going to return. Tell the guys at the Post Office they can have the stuff in my locker and tell my wife I love her. LOL

I tried to find the post with the rules, because I thought there might be something I might start following too, but I didn't find them. Could you tell me about the rules or point to the post with them, Steve?

Oh boy. I've been playing a few game days every day, so everything is fresh in my mind. Are you sure you're ready for this?

Grid assignment: I go where I'm told. If I'm there for two weeks and if I haven't seen anything I roll a six-sider. On a '1' I consider myself ordered to an adjacent grid. Anything else and I'm there for another week, this time moving on a '1' or a '2'. And so on.

Weather reports: Every day at the nearest hour to the one I departed at I make a position report. I use the GWX pull-down map with the little extra grid map to get the full location. Right in front of me is my latest: BF1311. Four game days ago, I kid you not, it really was BF1337. Anyway, I then add course and speed. Then weather. I use the Watch Officer to get the base weather, and then look at the wind speed. I roll another die. On a '3' or '4' it is what it is. On a '1' it's two m/s slower than what he said. On a '2' it's one m/s slower, and on a '5' or '6' it's one or two m/s faster. THEN...I keep in mind what time of year it is, because I'm using the Seasonal setting in SH3 Commander's version of the 'Big Waves' mod. June-July it's normal, August-September and April-May it's x1.25, October-November and February-March it's x1/5, December-January it's x2. So I get wind speeds as high as 30 m/s in winter, which matches what the waves look like with the mod.

Two days ago, August 8, 1939, I was in BF1382, Course 255, Speed 4 kts, Sky Clear, Wind 19 m/s, Sea State 8, Waves 5 meters high. Then I file a Status Report, which for this purpose is useless in the game, but has a chance of telling the Allies where I am, which is realistic.

Me, anal? No way!

On the other hand if you slip off to another grid for the sake of your boat and your crew, who's gonna know (besides the Gestapo spy I mean)?

Steve is nothing like that...he promised me he would remain faithful....but to who I'm not quite sure :DL

That's my wifes favourite quote :yep: and the Gestapo spy, whilst having a rest in the middle of the atlantic whilst there was still the gap, met an unfortunate accident whilst swimming. Well, we dived - I'm guessing he didn't hang on for long. :o

hey, if any-of-ya's got any "personial rules" lets here'm. I know this has been done before, but refresh our memories and share your "personial rules" again. I'm sure there many new ones out there . It'll make the experence for some better. I think I just hyjacked my own thread. :hmmm:

When it comes to patroling, my rules are a bit more lax than Sailor Steve's.

I partrol the hell out of my assigned grid for a week.
Once that week is up I get to choose an adjacent grid, then patrol that for a week.
Once that week is up I choose another adjacent grid, and so on.

Gives me a certain freedom of movement without me just freelancing wherever the hell I like.

I used to have personal rules about not using the periscope when I was traveling too fast, not reloading externals in rough weather, not reloading internals whilst on the surface in rough weather etc . . .

But no need now, h.sie and stiebler's fixes take care of that for me. :DL

wow.
My rules as follows:
1. stay in grid given until fuel runs low enough to make you worry about return home.
2. if there's a lot of "heat," put them down carefully. Or just don't hang out next to them. They have an operating pattern, just don't operate inside their pattern :D Use that box!

I don't worry about shallow water, cause I've only not gotten away once at periscope depth... every time I "go deep," I've died lol
Just stay submerged all day, then operate decks awash twice a night for recharge! :D
Pretend you're a sub in enemy waters... :P

These are my hard rules, some are based on real life practices and for realism.

Rules / Best Practices

0.) Remember, the game AI always cheats.

1.) Do a test crash dive and go deep (140 to 160 meters) to test valves and seals as soon as in deep water at beginning of Patrol.

2.) Always cruise at one third speed (max fuel economy).

3.) Always do a hydrophone (20 to 30 meters) and periscope check before surfacing.

4.) Surface at half or full speed and continue that speed until batteries are recharged then back to one third. (If you have to crash dive you are already going at a good speed)

5.) Have W/O provide weather report every four (4) hours. (i.e. 0000, 0400, 0800, 1200, 1600, 2000 hrs. helps with the boredom factor)

6.) Practice crash dives every 2 to 3 days or more frequently if needed. (helps with boredom)

7.) Always load external Torpedoes at night if possible with calm seas (2 mps or less) at dead stop. If daylight, Flak crews are on station. (Always attempt to do this in the middle of no where)

8.) Send Patrol reports every 3 to 5 days and always at night at varied and odd times.

9.) Always go to the assigned grid as ordered and stay on station as long as possible.

10.) Only go to the adjacent grids to your assigned grid, if no action in the assigned grid within a reasonable amount of time.

11.) Two knots is max speed when using the periscope.

12.) Only show your periscope for a minute or so at a time, maximum. (use the stop watch to help)

13.) Never go faster than 128 TC going to assigned quadrant and during Patrol.

14.) No more than 512 TC maximum on return to base, 256 TC is better.

15.) Never use TC in the presence of the enemy.

16.) Never chase a convoy that is 250 km or more ahead of you that is traveling in your same general direction.

17.) Always crash dive when A/C spotted, even if you know they could be friendly.

18.) Always fire two torpedoes at any target over 6000 tons.

19.) Avoid attacking a target when wind speed is 14/15 MPS. (good chance of pre-detonation)

20.) Always attack submerged during daylight and on the surface at night up 1942. From 1943 on all attacks are made submerged.

21.) Remember, the game AI always cheats.

It has on one occasion.:o I really did not follow the rule to do it in the middle of nowhere, being in a hurry to re-engage a convoy. This all comes around to rule # 0 and 21 .. The AI always cheats.
