Because Donald Regan was only a former Secretary of the Treasury and a White House Chief of Staff.

Now if you were talking about Ronald Reagan I could see your point. :03:

Think it has something to do with Reagan strengthening the military and beginning the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Putin and now other members of the Russian govt are Soviet Esque, or at least their attitudes towards the US are.

Whereas Obama (to Poland's dismsy) took down the missile shield and is making us more vulnerable to them on paper.

Benjamin Franklin is honored on a 1956 Soviet era stamp. Guess we better kick that dirty red mole out of the Founding Fathers. :88)

Ronald Reagan really wasn't that great of a president. He increased the national debt for no real good reason, started the takeover of our government too wall street, oversaw the dismantlement of our production in america, arguably started the war on the middle class and allegedly colluded with the Iranians to keep the hostages so carter would look bad. Besides soviet union had been decaying for years it would have happened anyways, he was just lucky he gets to take credit.

I have no love for the man, and personally, the only reason republican officials and office holders laud him is because he lowered the taxes on their rich friends.

Not wishing to speak ill of the guy, since I'm a big fan of Reagan...however is it not possible that the great American debt crisis that is happening now had its origins in the massive defence budget of the Reagan era?

I mean, yes, it bankrupted the Soviets in the short term...but now it's bankrupting America. :hmmm:

Yeah but the USSR bankrupted first so it is still a victory like on the fields Heraclea and Asculum so it is a win for Ronnie:03:

Yah, Pyrrhic is definitely the word for it.

I wonder if the Soviet Union would have collapsed without the defence budget wars though, given Gorbies moderate reformist stance and the tensions in the Pact. Of course, hindsight is a wonderful thing...but I do wonder.

It was bound to, the model just doesn't work, quite frankly I am surprised the soviet union lasted as long as it did.

It was a dead end cycle...but there was always the chance for adapting towards Market socialism which is what I think Gorbie was going to try to do before it all collapsed. Taking a look at the PRC, you have to wonder if that too will go the same way as the Soviet Union or whether the changes made under Deng will give it a greater chance of surviving in the modern era.
I mean, yes at the moment it is an economic powerhouse...but that is all built on a very very unstable system which is teetering on a cliff edge and is constantly being adjusted by the central control to prevent an inflation overdrive as they fight to close the gap between the coast and the interior.

All things to their time and place; just as the Roman Republic faded into history, as did the Aztec at Tenochtitlan, and the Qing Dynasty of China... no form of government is permanent, no lines on a map are permanent, no religion is permanent - they just feel that way to us in our limited lifespans. All things wax and wane.

Why do they call him "Venjamin Franklin"? Or have I just forgotten what capital V and B look in cyrillic?

Hell, I'll put my own face on Oreos if I could send them to Congress with the directions, "Eat me."

I think we could have easily put Reagan's face on Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and just about every other manufacturing based state's food stamps. He started the trend of allowing those jobs to pack up and move, never to return.

Yes, because the Supreme Court are nutritional experts. I'm sure if they said black holes don't exist, we'd listen to them instead of Stephen Hawking.

If we won the Cold War, why hasn't our military spending gone down?

I think Dwight David Eisenhower would have an opinion on this..

I get what your saying. It's true, the man who had a huge part in winning the war in Europe saw this coming a mile away.
