View Full Version : A couple of newbie questions

Again a newbie with stupid questions......

To get to the business imediately:

1. First to post a picture.... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v55/lwwwl/Clipboard02-3.jpg

...what I am wondering is next. So he tells me that bearing is 346.....but what I am not sure is this.......

Does he mean that:

A)the ship is heading in that direction (i presume it's this) or

B)did he locate him on that direction (but the way where he is going is not known).....

...if its B I do not understand according to which kompass is this ship located.....

....if its A.....again is he saying that he is moving towards 346 according the global kompass (again I presume its this) or compared to my sub.

2. About the crew.....the only thing I hate about this game is the crew fatigue so I turned it off with SH3 commander, but my crew is still automatically going into resting cabins.....now I wouldnt mind this if this was happening during no action period, but when i surface the boat I am expecting my WATCH officer to get on the deck, but instead I have to manually put him there everytime.

Are there any auto-options for crew management or am I stuck with this.

3. Do i get any extra renowns for contacting my contacts and regulary sending my reports?

...this is it for now.

Thanks in advance.

Hi www2,

The bearing is the direction the enemy ship is from your UBoat,so if it is at bearing 0 then he is directly ahead of you,if he is at bearing 270 he is to your left, and so on.This is also true for submerged sound contact (we follow sound and not visual bearings this time) bearings, which is what we use to track targets underwater.
Also if you needed to know this, the angle on bow is the direction your UBoat is from your ENEMY's observation point.

I THINK you are stuck with the watch officer problem,as I too sometimes get annoyed at having to place him at his post all the time, other than that the 'main' watch attend to their posts.

You get no (someone correct me if I am wrong) renown for making contact with the enemy, only by sinking them do you earn recognition. Also,if you are playing the stock game you will get a small (again, correct me if I am wrong) renown bonus for reaching your patrol grid and returning home, but in the major expansion pack (I heartily recommend you upgrade to this) GWX3 they removed the renown for reaching your patrol grid, and thats a good thing.

Good hunting.

H.sie's mod "Realism- and gameplay-related hardcode fixes for SH3.EXE"
takes care of the watchman problem. (One still has to make sure that there is an Officer in the front resting area and preferably someone with the Watchman qualification. Otherwise works like a charm and is a very good mod in other ways too, IMO.

If you only want the watch officer fix, I think H.sie has that too as a standalone mod in his Mediafire pages.

Gonna try it as soon as I find just the officer fix.

Sorry for that but I also am interested in a stand alone version of the watch officer fix. I looked at h.sie's mediafire pages but I didn't find it.
A little help please!

I don't think there is a standalone version. However it is one of the options in his realism patch, all of which you can select or deselect at will using the included Options Selector.

If the WO fix is all you want, just install the patch and select that option and nothing else. :yeah:

Yeah, FK is right. There is no separate mod - remembered it wrong. No worries, though, the same effect can be achieved by using HSie's mod and then selecting the watch officer fix from the selector program that is included:

It should be easy, I had no problems installing this fix. Tick only "Move 1WO to bridge" if you don't need the other effects of the mod.

There's a little 'Help' tool on the Attack Map, which if turned on locks a small bearing tool onto your sub and turns with it, so you can see relative bearings no matter what direction you're pointing on the chart. I'm not sure if there's one for the Nav Map as well, mainly because I got used to knowing the bearings.

Just realized something....if the bearing is as you say in comparison to my sub, than by looking at the picture above, how is that angle 346.....shouldnt it be something like cca 25 °......or am I missing something?

I can't figure out your picture, either. It seems that the contact is some 30 degrees to the starboard side and that your true course is something like 224. The sound man should be reporting a contact bearing 30 degrees. Are you sure your sound man knows what he's doing? :) The clock on your screenshots says 0456 and the sonar man's report says 0454. Are you sure you haven't changed course during that 2 minute gap?

I don't see those sonar lines and own submarine's course lines that you have in your picture, in my game, as I play with the contacts off option, so maybe someone else can help you out here.

But you might try this, to make things clearer: You seem to be running GWX. I suggest you zoom in (in the navigation window, F5) all the way to your submarine until a ring with bearings appears. This ring shows relative bearings. If the contact's sonar line crosses at 90, then his bearing is 90, he should be exactly on your right / starboard side, and the soundman should report a contact, bearing 90.

...Or this is a new contact that entered detection range but doesn't show soundbearings on the map yet. When in doubt, listen through the hydrophone yourself where the sound is coming from. :know:

p.s. But the money is on the OP changing course right after the report came. (I think he moved the waypoint marker according to the text messages, and then the uboat changed course at flank speed.)
