been playing for about 2 days and I have yet to sink anything.. any ideas? How do you get a deck gun? you have to buy it but it is not available in the store...

How do the campaigns progress? can I upgrade this sub and take it with me or is spending time with the 1939 sub a waste of time and I should just skip to another year..

Another thing, my crew seems to be dieing or something because all of a sudden they disapear and I have no officer in the room.

please help me thanks, I know I sound like a total noob here but please.

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

First off, what kind of boat are you using? The Type II was too small to ever have a deck gun, and the others in the game do have them.

The campaign moves forward by date. You go on a patrol, you sink ships, you go home. After a time in port you do it all over again. Sometimes you'll find more ships than you can sink; other times you'll find nothing at all. The Allied escorts get better as time goes on until you reach the point that surviving the patrol outweighs all other considerations.

Yes, you will be able to upgrade your boat, or get a newer one, as time goes by.

I'm not sure what you mean by crew disappearing, other than the obvious. What exactly is happening? They certainly shouldn't disappear.

If you're submerging or surfacing, or if you press one of the six buttons to automatically assign the crew to different stations, the crew will move about the boat without you clicking them and moving them.

As for how often you get to shoot at stuff, I've spent some patrols where I've gone a "month" of game time without seeing anything, and other patrols have them almost lined up for me to knock them down :D

Finally, for boat upgrades, etc., are you running any mods? If not, then you should sink some stuff, do a couple of missions, and see if anything good pops up on your upgrade page :D
If you start with a type II, it will take a little bit to upgrade to a type VII. The only way around that is to start a new career from a different... squadron?

Thanks for all the replies.. My crew was tired, that is why they would not cooperate. Didn't get a chance to play yesterday, but hopefully today I will sink my first ship :)

first kill, class C destroyer 1375 tons... using auto-targeting, I went around looking for more ships and found another one, but I could not get my torpedoes to fire, it just says "loading tube 1" and nothing happens, and when I look at the weapons screen it shows there is one in the slot, must be doing something wrong. Felt good to finally sink something.

They take some time to reload, unless you uncheck 'Realistic Reloads'. Also, do you have enough men in the torpedo room? The more you have, and the more green you see in the bar at the top, the faster they'll load.

Yea, I realistic reload takes a long time.. I noticed there is a timer if you put the mouse over the torpedo.. I am going to have to start a new campaign I wasted all my money on officers and now I can't buy that 2500 dollar sub that just became available.

must have gotten lucky, I been having a bad day and been missing convoys, not even a single hit.. I let myself get killed just to see what would happen and it seems there is no way to exit the death screen I have end task in windows.

In GWX you supposedly get this radio message from Dönitz when the war ends.

I been reading on some other threads about "opening the torpedo tubes", I basically just lock the target and press the fire button, am I doing something wrong?

I just installed grey wolves 3.0 and it seems like a whole new game..

Press the Q key on your keyboard to open the outer doors at least ten seconds before firing.

W closes them again.

If you don't open them prior to firing, it delays the shot for several seconds. This can play havoc with your firing solution, so you're generally best to manually open the door(s) prior to launch. :yep:

GW 3.0 is rough, first trip out and I am having trouble making out the flags... all seem to be neutral or german.. all of a sudden I see a A&B destoryer coming at me fast, so I quickly dive to periscope depth, I look at what appears to be a English flag, at least I thought it was.. put 3 torpedoes in and he sinks after 2 (3rd one was overkill), when i look at the map the sunken ship is green,, oops
Then a "armed trawler" comes and starts firing, I try to man the deckgun and before I know it i have 8 men dead, so i try to go to periscope.. I dunno what happened next but the crew went into a panic dive straight to the bottom of the ocean and slammed into the sea floor. We were they would not surface.. game over.

It sounds like you just had a baptism under fire...

We've all had some really rough first patrols, but the good news is your tactics will steadily improve to combat the chilling new realities. There is a learning curve, no doubt, but the sense of accomplishment makes it more than worthwhile.

Thanks for the report, hope to hear more in the future kaleun! :salute:

If it was your first trip out in GWX, did your patrol start in August 1939? If so, the war had not started yet. Hostilities begin with Poland on Sept 1 and with England and France on Sept 3 - but until then, all ships are neutral. GWX starts in August 1939 to give you at least one "practice" patrol prior to sailing under combat conditions. If you attack anything during that time, however, you start your own private little war with the nation of whatever ship you attacked. That nation's ships will then attack you on sight for the following 24 hours, whether their country is at war with Germany or not. (The same holds true throughout the war if you attack neutrals.)

If you are using Commander you can choose any month/year for a start date, but if you don't use Commander and start in 1939 I think you are going to start in August by default.

yes, you are correct.. it was august 1939, that would explain it
