View Full Version : China’s Aircraft Carrier Powering Up

Well, this is certainly noteworthy. These images clearly show the lights on aboard China’s first aircraft carrier, the Shi Lang (ex Soviet Varyag). Remember a few months ago when we saw pictures of exhaust coming from the ship’s stack (http://defensetech.org/2011/05/06/chinese-aircraft-carrier-almost-ready/)? How about when those weapons started appearing on board (http://defensetech.org/2011/05/20/the-ten-barreled-ciws-of-chinas-aircraft-carrier/)? Then we saw how scaffolding and other construction gear were being removed (http://defensetech.org/2011/06/17/construction-gear-being-removed-from-chinas-carrier/) from the ship. This is just one more sign of how close the refurbished ship is to putting to sea. (Many estimates have put its maiden voyage as happening sometime this year.)
Also note how the mid-ship jet blast deflector is in the up position in these photos.

What will they be flying off her? A Chinese copy of the Su-33 called the J-15, the Ka-28 Helix ASW Helicopter or Z-9C ASW helicopter and the Z-8 AEW helicopter, plus the JL-9 Trainer as needed.

Anyway, I'll be interested to see how they get on with the Shi Lang. Pride of China, made in the Ukraine.

Yeah well I have some clippers made in South Korea!
Sometimes when I go to a store like Walmart(I don't go to such stores very often) I will challenge my daughter to find a product that is made in the USA:haha: there are not very many.Funny thing is back in the day Walmart was all about "made in the USA" remember those adds? Then they changed their tune very sneaky like one day to the whole low price thing which is also bogus.
Most advanced Chinese military equipment is a copy of foreign technology and they even tend to have trouble with the licensed copies much less making their own designs.
