View Full Version : Is SH5 worth playing over SH3 yet?

I am a huge fanboy of SH3, which earned its right, and have been for over 5 years. I've been modding it for that long too. I have some questions if I should even give SH5 the time of day again. I have a couple questions that are very important to me concerning a Uboat sim, and if they are not met SH3 meets my needs just fine.
These questions can be answered concerning the stock SH5 or modded SH5, no matter.
1. What uboats can I use in SH5? I can use Type IIA, IIB, IID, VIIB, VIIC, IXB, IXC, IXD/IXD2, and XXI in SH3.
2. Can I start the war in Aug or Sept. 1939 and continue to May 5th 1945 unimpeded? I can in SH3.
3. Can I go anywhere in the world that has the ocean? I can in SH3.
4. Do I have options which flotilla I'm with and what base I leave out of? I can with SH3 and more options when its modded.
5. Can I pick my crew before patrols, give medals, and upgrade my boat? I can with SH3 modded with SH3 Commander.

Pditty8811, if you haven't figured it out yet, it looks less like you're after an honest appraisal of SH5 than bragging about what SH3 can do. We've already had our spate of fanboys (admitted or not) of one game slagging the other, and it's not a good idea to start it all over again.
No, there are still a lot of things SH5 cannot do. This is because the focus was changed, and with the help of some talented and dedicated modders SH5 is very good at doing what it was meant to do, and getting better all the time.
Perhaps you honestly wanted to find out more, but if so your phrasing could have been better.

So download some mods and install them and give SH5 a spin. Only you can determine if it's good or not. Everyone's opinion is biased in some way or another.

I personally, do not consider Silent Hunter 5 to be any good at all.....I bought the game about three months ago and tried to play it, and quit after about 10 minutes.
Tonight, I tried to play it again and tinkered around with it for a good while to give it a chance, but I'm sorry the feeling just isn't there. I originally thought walking around the submarine would be fun and really immersive, but I don't know, maybe its just me, but it doesn't feel right and if anything just feel more a chore.
The interface is all crappy and arcady and god knows what the game designers thought they were doing. Did they even bother to look at how they made SH3 & 4???
I guess its back to SH4.....but SH5 is being shelved and is among a very small pile of "forgotten" games that I have. Not two minutes ago, I finally uninstalled it from my PC, it will no longer grace my hard drive and I'm afraid I wish I hadn't bought it. In truth, I actually feel like throwing it away I'm so dissapointed.
Shame such a great series had to fall from grace so far and hard!! :(

I've come from SH4 and although the initial amount of modding is a bit of a nightmare, I'd say it's well worth it when it comes together. Have you thought about changing your map colors (the tools drawing lines color)? The exe patcher I made will let you select colors for the tools drawings among other things.

I agree. Try SH5 (it's damn cheap now) and see how it goes. There's quite a jump from 3 to 5, particularly in the graphics department. It's also a different game from 3 or 4. For me, it was like learning SH all over again - none of the familiar controls were there and the kb controls are different. Mods help with getting a familiar interface and in other areas. SH5 was worth the learning curve.

I have no experience with SH3, but my SH5 game time is increasing all the time. Visually I think its the best of the range, and as said above there are somethings it cannot do. Myself I think the sinking mechanics are a let down, but again that's my personal opinion.
I think you should at least try it and with the Mods that are available you should be able to taylor the game to something that you enjoy.
If it wasn't for the hard work of the modders of this community the game wouldn't be where it is now and for that I say thanks ;)
I wonder why Steve had to feed the troll. A successful troll is a successful troll and I respect them. Until post 3-5 everything was ok, but the argument clinic is really that attractive? How about me going on the SH3 forum and asking stupid question like this? Im sure that I will get banned instantly because of trolling. Same as I was once because bashing a SH3 fan :/
I kindly ask the moderators to close these kind of topics and also stop this assault on SH5. There is a lot of SH6 fans who do a LOT of things to improve/fix the game, even if is made by Ubi. We dont deserve this kind of humiliations and trolling. Thanks.

Allow me to answer your first question is 'SH5 worth playing over SH3* yet?'
Absolutely.
*SH3 incl. upto 5yrs of mods as opposed to 1yr for SH5.
I think what you have to remember is SH5 is not SH3 with a 2010 graphics uplift so you can't compare gameplay apples for apples.
What you should do is get yourself modded up, go through all the in game tutorials then invest a good 10hrs of gameplay to see if it grabs you.

Because he's been posting honestly and well in other forums, so I thought I'd give him a chance. If I was right then I've done the forums a favor. If I was wrong then I look like a fool. It won't be the first time.

In case you've forgotten, you did that once. You weren't banned, or even warned, just admonished. As I've done to everyone I've seen doing that sort of thing.

I thought my reply to pditty8811 was fair enough. His questions may be honest, as he says, but his wording certainly wasn't the best. That said, if he really is looking for answers, he deserves them. If he really is looking for trouble he'll be found out and punished. For the time being I like to hope for the best. The only reason I haven't given any answers is that I still don't have SH5, so any comparison I did would likely be biased. That said, I think I've read enough of SH5 to be honest about it.

Now to your questions. The reason I say it could have been worded better is because each one reads like you already new the answers, and knew that in some respects SH3 is still better. So you can see where the "trolling" accusations come from.
But, in the interest of honest relations I'll do my best to answer them. No, I haven't played the game, but there is more information here than there is on most events from ancient history and I quote those all the time, so I'll take the chance.
1. What uboats can I use in SH5? I can use Type IIA, IIB, IID, VIIB, VIIC, IXB, IXC, IXD/IXD2, and XXI in SH3.
Only the Type VII, but you get the VIIA, VIIB, VIIC and, I think VIIC41. The reason is that they pushed the boundaries and gave the player the ability to walk through the entire boat. I didn't want this feature, but then I was against SH3's 3D crew, and I've reached the point where I can't live without them, so I'll probably grow to like this when the time comes.
But no, there is no Type II, Type IX or Type XXI, the first of which I consider a huge negative.
2. Can I start the war in Aug or Sept. 1939 and continue to May 5th 1945 unimpeded? I can in SH3.
September 1939 yes, August no. The stock game ends in 1943, but several talented people, including Zedi, are working their tails off to make 1945 a reality. Because of the way I play I wish we could start in 1944 or '45, but that's probably not far off either.
3. Can I go anywhere in the world that has the ocean? I can in SH3.
Answered by Trevally. I would like to add that you can't really go into the Pacific in SH3, though you can in SH4.
4. Do I have options which flotilla I'm with and what base I leave out of? I can with SH3 and more options when its modded.
Even SH3 is limited in that regard. There are only so many flotillas available, and adding a new one means dropping an old one.
5. Can I pick my crew before patrols, give medals, and upgrade my boat? I can with SH3 modded with SH3 Commander.
Not really a fair question, since SH3 Commander is a special program constructed by a very talented programmer. SH4 and SH5 could both have the same functions if some equally talented programmer chose to do the same for them. That no one has is not a reflection on either game.
Now for my opinion, which, though possibly biased is probably not far off from what it would be had I been playing the game from the start.
SH5 is still a work in progress, as is SH4. SH3 is still being developed, but all the new work is trying to catch up to where SH5 is already.
The Good: SH5 is graphically the most intense and most beautiful of all the SH series, and in that respect the most immersive.
The Bad: As has been pointed out many times elsewhere, great graphics don't really make up for mediocre gameplay. Stock SH5 suffers from problems, but so did SH4 and SH3. Further, if the people who say that really truly believed it they'd be going out of their way to find copies of Aces Of The Deep, because for sheer variety in every respect that one still hasn't been topped. That said, I played AOTD a few times last month, and while it is incredibly immersive in the way it feels, I have to admit that the way it looks is a big part of the feel to me, and it just doesn't cut it anymore.
The Good: SH5 has better crew interaction and walking through the whole boat.
The Bad: The interaction is extremely limited and the boat is not drawn in detail, and there are very few crewmembers aboard. Of course every detail and every crewman you add increase the load on the computer. Also, they have done away with all the crewmembers having names in favor of more detail for the few they do have. And while you can talk to a few of them, the conversation is very limited. Bear in mind that these things are being worked on.
Things I Look Forward To: SH5 is almost certainly the future. Problems are being solved and defects corrected almost daily. It has the most potential of any of them, and if playing a subsim and sinking ships is your goal then it is the best.
Things I'm Still Unhappy About: I can't play in my lovely little Type II. I like the way SH4 handles crew management. Neither SH3 nor SH5 meets that standard. On the other hand SH4 has a couple of its own little quirks which can be quite annoying.
My Biggest Peeve: The u-boat pens. SH3 had the harbors all screwed up, though mods have corrected much of that (of course I don't have the computer to run some of them). SH4 has the exact same flaws, and no one yet adapted the SH3 modded harbors for SH4. SH5 seems to have much more accurate harbors from the start, and there is a mod which adds so much more it's beautiful and scary at the same time. But SH5, in an effort to make it more 'immersive' has you start from the sub pen. This is a problem for me because Kiel didn't get pens until very late in the war (after the stock game ends, in fact) and Wilhelmshaven never had sub pens at all. This annoys me more than anything, and in spite of all the endorsements for the game from those who play it regularly makes me grind my teeth every time I see someone post pictures of those harbors.
But a great many love it and their opinion is as valid for them as anyone else's is for them. I'll probably end up playing all three, just because they all have things I love and they all have things I hate. And yes, I'll still play AOTD and SH1 from time to time. For me there seems to be no winning.

Well thank you very kindly for the most informed answer. So it seems "the Workhorse" is the only boat for play in SH5 thus far.
The modders are hard at work trying to improve the game, which I always appreciate their hard work. But with all the work necessary to bring SH5 to where we would all like it, may make someone wonder if it would be more economical in or efforts to wait for a SH6 instead?
I believe the modders can change SH5 to be even as boundless as SH3 but this will take time. By which a sequal would be out by then?
The modders need a good foundation to build their building. But if the foundation isn't up to par, wouldn't efforts be more valuable elsewhere?

The odds of there being an SH6 are somewhere between slim and none. There is a better chance of some other company making a completely new sub sim, but UBIsoft doing another one? Not much. Even if they did, it would probably be even worse out of the box.
I believe the modders can change SH5 to be even as boundless as SH3 but this will take time. By which a sequal would be out by then?
As above. There almost certainly will be no sequel.

Not really. Where would they put their efforts? Current SH3 mods are geared toward making SH3 more like SH5, which begs the question: Why make something work like something else when the something else already exists. SH4 already looks and works better than SH3, and all it needs are the 'fluff' mods - the harbors and all the different ships, and its campaign system is much better, but nobody seems interested. SH5 looks better still. It has its own quirks, but getting around those seems to be a matter of time. And again, very few seem interested.
I'll keep playing SH3 until the previously mentioned problems with the others are solved. That said, the SH5 guys have a valid point: Why keep trying to make the past look as shiny as the future when the future is already here?

I would have been on the SH5 bandwagon had the game had more scope and diversity out of the box. But now were asking the modding community to create interiors walking up and down subs of Type II's IX's and XXI's. To basically create what SH5 has done with the Type VII three times over with the other subs.
This will take alot of modeling and graphic working by the modders. Time consuming, and by the time it is all done it will be a completely different game. Perhaps even a different genre than it was out of the box. :D
I've come from SH4 and although the initial amount of modding is a bit of a nightmare, I'd say it's well worth it when it comes together. Dynamic Environment, KZS's new hull-wetness mod, MO and the new OHII Light campaign have really turned the stock SH5 into something brilliant. seeing the water and boat makes my son drool!!
one day i will get SH5, maybe just for the eye candy or to make my son happy. cant live in the past forever, but SH3 is not past - not just yet anyway :yeah:

So far SH5 hasn't been worth the time, for me.
I've been running all useful mods I could find and it still doesn't do anything for me. It's just not as exciting as SH3 was, when I sink a ship it's '....yay.......NEXT', put the TC on +5000 and off we go.
It's just a shame that this game needs that much modding to be playable (hurray for modders though, you rule!)
Above would be the case IF SH5 would've worked correctly at all and not CTD every 5 minutes or so

interesting feedback. nice to see, many are still fighting for sh5, even all sim-fans must admit, that sh3 has the "better" simfeeling.
:03:
anyway.
overall one point is important, pditty. sh5 is totally different game concept. one famous u-boat type, you are the captain, you decide what to do. your officers have rpg-elements and you can earn special abilities. the gameplay is split into different decades, which have different briefings and missions. to me it feels like a film you play, with some individual flavor.
:yep:
if you like it more or not, just decide it on your own. but sh5 does not have many things sh3 had and has. if this is good or bad is part of your personal opinion. in general one can say, sh3 gives you more possibilities and sh5 has much more nice looking graphics.
:o
its obvious. the main positive development of sh5 compared to sh3 is the graphics and a better gui. gameplay differs totally. so i guess, as a fan of sh3 you wont like sh5 very much. but try it, if you like. tdw and other modders did a lot of work (better ai, nice looking guis, more crew, graphics polishment, etc.) to sh5 and with its nice "open horizont mod" you can play the whole war now. so its good looking and a patrol is not that bad, as the new mods and the eye candy have its charme. but for me that was never enough. so its been a few starts, but no finished patrol so far.
:smug:
just my2cents.
I've tried SH5 and it didn't work for me...in fact i ended up thinking "Ubisoft should somehow be held accountable for releasing such a buggy piece of crap....I bet on a world level thousands of people have brought this and been thoroughly dissapointed with it...It's ok saying "then download these mods and see if they help" but truth is....you shouldn't need to do that!...The software industry is still the land of gangsters and crooks...We need some encompassing legislature that'll give protection to the consumer....I can't even get my money back at the shop where i brougfht SH5..they are uninterested that it's a jungle of bugs and unplayable out of the box....This is wrong..!!
Sure there's a thousand different computer configurations and making something that'll work on every machine is always gonna be tough...but even still.....software shouldn't be this BAD!..
A lot of people have offered the advice "buy it and see if it's something for you".....I disagree with this advice...The moment you have brought it you've put money into ubisofts account...Why should they be rewarded for releasing such a badly written piece of software....I'd say "save your money and let ubisofts dwindling income be a wake up call for them..if you release a poor product you pay by losing that business"

SH5 Yes Its got more Bugs than the Amazon Rain Forest what a pity...
Just to a few simple searches and you can spot the TROLL.
Most of the times?
It starts with a Zedi
:nope:
Infact that Zedi troll has killed any hopes of any really good stuff ever
being released.
This the 3th time you pick on me. Now guess what... it was the last one. Word.

Edited the original post from a simple Z to Zedi.
That is TROLL at work in a very simple form!
I'm amazed Steve did not spot that bit of work!
:haha:
Now cry me a river about how I pick on you mate!
(I used a small 'm' to show what respect I feel towards your small tricks)
Word?
What are we trying to replicate here?
Stupid street gangsta stuff?
Here's a 'word' for ya!
Moron!
Now send a PM to Neal or the Mods that I insulted you.
I'll get a few more dings added to my already bad record for insulting Morons.
Heck! You might get me keel hauled again!
In which case I'll just laugh my arse off!!
I stopped careing long ago because of Morons like you!
Those of us that have spent YEARS working on SH stuff
don't owe you a DAMNED thing!
Lest of all any kind of respect with your additude.

Oh, this will go well. :O:
Hhaha i love this guy. A true prophet.
As for me, its a great game, but i am a history/realism nut, so there a quite a few areas I wish i could fix myself but have not the skills to ammend them.
Friggin thing looks sweeeeet and some of the mods are sexy as hell.
SH5 will kick SH3's ass in a few years of that I am sure. Progress is being made daily, and seeing new milestones getting hit is worth the price of admission. This is a niche market to say the least, if anything, be glad we at least have something to work with and improve.

Very well said. :sunny:

I'm sure it will too. For me that day will be when I can run other types of u-boats.

I am. Glad that is. I'm glad there are all these different choices.

Not from me. I think there's room for all, just as there's room for improvement in all.

His leaveing had nothing to do with me.
As for 'Winning the InterNet'?
Maybe time connected to it gives me a better overall view (and access) of it then most people have.
Or maybe haveing been the owner of the first InterNet Service in My area that I sold access to others way back in the mid '90's does that.
:hmmm:
I really don't much care one way or another.
But if one throws BS around?
They will tend to smell like BS.
And if they then whine about smelling like it?
Meh!!
