A whole lot of folks have bought new rigs with Win 7 and are faced with a mass of confusing suggestions of just how to get through it all to once again play a game we enjoy.

Being an "old fart" (74) and in no way shape or form a GURU, if doing a fix is complicated----- IT WILL NOT HAPPEN HERE IN MY HOUSE!!!!

What is needed is a web site or something that has a list of what we have sofar as hardware and soft ware to direct us to a PRECISE method of being able to once again enjoy playing SH3 up to GWX3.

When I started to install SH3 a few days ago it did not ask for the long number code ( as it always did on my old Win XP ).

Having spend a lot on my new rig from "Origin" , spending a few $ on a CD that inculided Everything ( SH3--- to GWX3 ) would suit me just fine. With
74 years behind me and less than 74 ahead I'll spend $ ( thinking 50 or so ) to save all of the hassel. If I do not spend my $ my kids will.

This old game worked over by the GW folks is to good to be left in the dust.

A suggestion would be to contact the developers at OFF who reworked CFS3 into a fantastic WW1 areial combat sim which by the way has NO WIN7 issues.

I look forward to your responces.

Here is what I wrote once in German language on the other forum. This is only a rough translation, maybe someone can read and correct it:

The attempt to install SH3 under VISTA / WIN 7 32/64Bit sometimes goes to fail ... In general, the user receives the following friendly message meant: "For the program to start it is required: OSR2.1 Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP or Server 2003."

Remedy: For a variety of contributions obtained for VISTA / WIN 7 32/64Bit at a glance: From now on administrator privileges are required!

1st. Installation path: NOT in C: \ Program but, for example: C: \ Games (bypassing the user control system).

2nd. install SH3 under consideration in step 1 DO NOT run the game now.

3rd. SH3 - Revision to version 1.4 patch and DO NOT start the game now.

4th. MAKE SURE a clean Install (existing folders in My Documents "SH3" delete or rename).

5th. DVDs with Starforce copy protection = WIN 7 can do NOTHING with this Starforce - version.

- Now You gooogle "Silent Hunter 3 v1.4b [ENGLISH] No-DVD/Fixed EXE" (see instructions)

- Remove traces of Starforce.

Tip: You will receive a StarForce - free version of SH3 for little money. My DVD has, for example, the EAN code 4 012 160 344,487th The caption reads: 815182nd The DVD is 500557.1. She also has a copy protection, but not Starforce. It must have been made AFTER 22.12.2006. However, it seems there are still SF-protected DVDs available.

6th. Current state of the art codecs? For example: k-lite codec pack.

7th. Patch for 4GB of memory for systems larger than 2 GB is recommended, for example the one by Master Yoda. README note, especially for 32-bit OS (bcdedit).

8th. Graphic Card - settings for anti-aliasing, etc. >>> do not "overdo".

If the intro videos cause problems: delete / rename them or replace them for example with my NullByteVideo Archive.

9th. It may still exist the need to make the following settings:

- right click on the sh3.exe (not shortcut) - properties - compatibility mode - WinXP

- Run as Administrator - - right click on the sh3.exe (not shortcut) and confirm

10th. Some users have on WIN 7 an ADDITIONAL DirectX 9.0c Version installed.

11th. Problems with the 3-D Engine: Some monitor will only support 60 Hz to 75 Hz, but it appears to be 59 Hz or 76 Hz in Win 7. Remedy:

- Screen resolution set to 1024 x 768 resolution and refresh rate settings, check under Monitor and adjust if necessary at 60 Hz or 75 Hz.

- Load and DX9HiResFix e.g. (Set depending on monitor! !!!!) in d3d9.cfg following values:

resX = 1920
ResY = 1200
useFiltering = 1
enableScreenshots = 1
screenshotPath =.

- The game now runs with, for example: 1920 x 1200 resolution, Windows 7 desktop has a different resolution, do not change it now!

- Change After playing the Windows 7 desktop resolution again, "turn it down" every time to play again (Thus different for SH3) and make sure that the monitor settings show 60 / 75 Hz.

12th. You can use MultiSH3 for several (large) MODS installations in parallel on the same computer. Is also recommended for testing purposes.

It has 18.000 hits so far, so it can't be that wrong.
