I know that you guys had a news article up on the home page about this a while back but I figured that I may as well update everybody on the conclusion.

http://shipfax.blogspot.com/2011/07/sub-tow-underway.html

The three remaining Oberon class subs are leaving Halifax Harbor.

HMCS Ojibwa will be preserved as a museum in Port Burwell, ON
HMCS Okanagan will be scrapped, along with ex-HMS Olympus likely at Port Maitland (which if I am not mistaken was where they scrapped the HMCS Fraser last year, real shame)

This basically concludes the saga of the "reserve" ex-navy ships that spent years tied up at Halifax Harbor in mothballs.

At least one will be preserved. Always a shame to see an O boat go. I think that's probably the last of them now. She's served her time well. :salute:

10 of 27 boats have been preserved either as museums or monuments (from Wikipedia) which is about 37% percent of class. Oberons (including our own...) have been treated kindly.

Poor Jim, always getting picked on.

I was going to ask why it was that a British sub was named after a North American aboriginal people, before I remembered that Canada had the boat, making Ojibwa a perfectly sensible name. Hey, it's early and I'm still getting my coffee.

Yup, the first three O class boats sent to Canada were all named for N. American tribes.

Today, somebody would protest the naming and force them to change it.

Ain't that the truth. Of course, the only American boat named after my people (Lenape) was a troop transport in 1918, so I probably wouldn't complain. (And no, ships named Delaware don't count. :D )

Who says anyone would protest anything? Where's your evidence?

This reflexive, knee-jerk, "cuh, the world today" attitude, with its perpetual eye-rolling and dismissive snorting probably causes more unhappiness for people than the supposed outrages they protest. I hate this default-to-cynicism response, which seems to arise out of a fear of being seen to make a mistake or be "wrong". I just can't understand it. These people seem to be the functioning majorly depressed, staying switched to automatic negative views as a defence mechanism - there's one poster on here who has practically made a religion out of it. It's probably the end result of gorging on too much internet news.

I mean Christ, cheer up. Or, by all means, keep banging your head against the wall.

Everyone deals with adversity their own way. There is precedent in the US for protests about Indian names on non-Indian things, like sports teams. I don't agree with it, but I understand it.

These days, it's nothing more than a means to litigate - forget winning the suit if you can just earn a negotiated settlement instead. That's not cynicism, that's a strategy.

Life's too short to be negative all the time. I'm content to sit back with a cold brew and enjoy a nice afternoon when I can. Some relax other ways.
