Were the IIs restricted to only patrolling the North Sea, or did they also patrol the Atlantic coastlines? Maybe some sneaky patrols in the Irish Sea?

If you go to http://www.uboat.net and look under boat types, then go to the pages for Type II boats and from there to the records for individual boats and their patrol records, you can click on View Patrol and actually see a map showing the progress of each patrol.
That doesn't really answer the question in general, though, does it. :O:
Somebody else will probably know for sure what areas they were typically assigned to patrol.

my understanding is that a lot of these were used in coastal roles in the North Sea off the Eastern Coast of England.
initially at least.
very soon though, many of these Type-II boats - in fact nearly all of them - were relegated to the role of school boats to train new crews.
There were patrols off the west coast of England by IID's from French bases, and I believe one or two might have done work by the entrances to the Irish Sea, so sort of in the Atlantic.

True, I hadn't even thought about them sailing from France... but even "coastal" patrols from there could've taken them into the Western Approaches.

There were a handful that they shipped by rail to operate in the Black Sea. They were very succesful there.

IICs did operate in The Atlantic
They traveled from Germany, patroled west of England, and finidhed up in France.
At least one operated west of Spain, and then refueled there for the return trip.
IIDs operated as far as south of Island, and worked from France for a while.
IIAs were school boats that were used very localy, when neccesary.
They also did ASW patrols in Skagerrak.
Unsure about how far IIBs went.

My question is.....
The TypeII that we get on the start of a career in 1st flotilla Kiel. That is a TypeIA? And if we give it the AA gun on the front deck upgrade, it essentially becomes a TypeIIB?

A very short ranged IIB, if you will.

It's listed as a IIA, and should be a IIB. I think GWX gives it the longer legs that effectively make it a B model.
