I recently took a plunge and ordered two copies of AVP Classic 2000, another oldy that I missed from my teen years. Now, I have played AVP2 and AVP Extinction before now, but this is the first time I've had the pleasure of playing the first one. Here is my initial thoughts.

Skirmish Mode - Similar to survivor mode in the L4D series, or firefight from Halo ODST and Reach. This is one of my favorite modes of play, especially online. (Which is why I ordered two copies, one for me and one for my girlfriend. Lucky me I got a gamer girl.)

Unlike Left 4 Dead and Halo where you fight off wave after wave of enemies, the aliens that swarm you are not separated into waves. Instead it feels more like one horde that progressively gets more and more fierce as you fight it off. You will get a few precious seconds to breathe, but nowhere near as much as the games mentioned above.

Three Campaigns - As always in the AVP series you have three campaigns to choose from, and while I fooled around a tad with the alien and predator campaigns, I spent most of my time focusing on the marine campaign thus far.

You could tell they were trying to get the feel from the movies into the game, a superior officer sits cozy in his office chair while he sends you into hell, being sure to over-act all of his lines as he gives you orders from conveniently placed TV screens. From alien infested colonies to tight space ship corridors, the feel of the alien franchise is here.

You also get a pretty decent array of weapons as Marines and Predators, all taken from the movies, from pulse rifles and flame throwers to shoulder-mounted plasma casters and throwing disks.

Multiplayer - There is a vast amount of modes and maps to choose from, and this game isn't dead. (Although it's not exactly springing with life either.)

Some of the modes are:

Deathmatch - kill people
Species Deathmatch - Kill people who do not look like you.
Infestation - The host of the game is an alien, while all others are marines, when a marine gets killed he is turned into an alien. The game is over when time runs out or all the marines are killed.
Coop - Skirmish mode online

The action is fast-paced, almost too fast paced. Especially noticeable as an alien and predator, you run blindingly fast. The alien in particular takes some getting used to, it's fast speed combined with the ability to climb walls and ceilings can be disorienting at first.

Graphics - Being over ten years old, the graphics are outdated by today's standards. Being a bit of a retro-fanatic this really doesn't bother me. The aliens look like aliens, the predators look like predators, and the marines look like marines. It gets the job done and you can't ask for more than that.

Price - The current steam price is $4.99 in U.S. Dollars. Which is kind of upsetting considering you can buy AVP(2010) for about $10 more. The price has increased as I've heard of other people buying this game for as cheap as $2.99.

However it's not all bad, AVP Classic 2000 on steam is kind of a package deal, as you get AVP Classic Gold Edition and the Millennium Expansion Pack already pre-installed when you download the game.

Current Verdict - While subject to change as I play more, my current rating for this one is a 3.7/5

My Scale:
0.0-1.0 = Lame
1.1-2.0 = Below Average
2.1-3.0 = Average
3.1-4.0 = Good
4.1-5.0 = Awesome
I rarely rate higher than 4 and have never given anything a perfect 5.

While not without it's flaws (most of which can be attributed to it's old age) I believe this game will make a fine addition to my collection and I expect to waste several hours of my life playing around on the multiplayer and campaigns it offers.

So, anyone else ever play this one? :shifty:
