Ms. Ford was a very fine, honest, and much to be admired person and deserves better than this...

I wish someone would find some legal way of putting Westboro out of business like that law group that went after various white supremicist and nazi groups, you know, sue them out of existence...

IIRC in order to pursue and win those kinds of lawsuits, they had to link those groups to the kind of hate speech that promotes and encourages actual violence and so led individuals to commit crimes against other people. I don't know that anyone's come up with any way to do that to the WBC. If they're working on it, then more power to them.

Unfortunately, showing up with hateful signs in a public place - provided any legal requirements regarding access and permits and whatnot are met - isn't a crime. But if nothing else it would be nice to see the WBC deluged with "pain and suffering" lawsuits by the families of the people whose funerals they show up at, even if the suits get thrown out eventually. You know, just to make the point. As much as I hate the idea of more supposedly "frivolous" lawsuits out there, in those cases I'd be willing to make an exception.

One can only hope that some good-hearted individuals will step in and (legally) block them from view this time, the way they have done in the past.

Also: I guess being divorced is now enough to generate the kind of hatred that the WBC is famous for. How lovely.

eventually a law will be passed to prevent the violence, and the only way to prevent that is to outlaw such gatherings of idiots like these.

I can't think of any other reason for WBC to do what they do. Their main mistake is that they protest everyone and everything. It really takes the point away from their protests. It really goes to show they don't stand for anything except screaming their hatred from every pulpit they can get ahold of.

It's like crazy guys on the street corner. The first one, you might pay some attention to. Maybe even the second. The third one, you start to chuckle at. After that, you walk by them without even noticing them.

I've heard some things to make me believe that they are doing it for money. Essentially, they are trying to get thrown out of a town so they can sue for damages

Maybe it would be better to just laugh at them, rather than validate their existence with our own anger. Just look at the signs they carry: "Thank God For Dead Soldiers", so on and so forth. They want us to be pissed off. That's the whole point. Ignore them.
