Check this thread, 'playable warships'.

And I quote myself on the matter:

"So I installed OM and all installments, and took a chance with the Admiral Scheer. I guess most members are right: surface ships are just dull. The trouble their creators went through to make them come to life is worth of compliments, but the game just isnt' quite made for that. It has been clearly designed for subs and just adapting graphic and damage models doesn't do the trick. Some really odd situations occured. Imagine having a 11in gun pointed at an armed trawler and it still tries to ram me! WTF?! he idea of blasting away an entire convoy has its charms, but a proper simulations has to be created for that. SH just won't do. So I hereby abandon my dreams of commerce raiding with the big guns a-blazin. Oh well.... :nope: "

I tried the Scheer and the Iowa. Like previously stated, it gets kind of dull after a while. The game expects you to work alone, like a submarine, so you don't get any task force DD escorts (which is ok for a raider like the Scheer, but for a large BB it's out of place). The other real problem I had was that the deck gunners still believed they were on the bobbing and rolling deck of a submarine, and their aim acted accordingly. Nine times out of 10 my target ship would hit me before my gunners hit it, even if it was a tanker or small tugboat with a 20mm AA gun. You can always man the guns yourself, but again the game limitations mean that only one or two guns are available for manual use. Not to mention that once a fire starts on your deck, it stays burning until you get to port, even if you have damage control repair everything.

I do remember once I loaded my Admiral Scheer with acoustic homing torpedoes, thinking of shutting off my engines and firing them at a convoy to start my attack. Of course a destroyer detects me and my gunners can't hit it while my own ship is missing about every shot. I instinctively fire a torpedo at the DD, forgetting I'm ahead flank. About 30 seconds later the predictable result occurred, and my pocket battleship was on its way to the bottom.

At least I think I got the mods there...
I read about a playable Yamato somewhere, but I never downloaded it. I figured it would be a lot like the Iowa mod. I'm sure you can find it pretty quickly, though. Either here or on google.
