effects of coning tower upgrades?

i have seen people on this site talk about coning tower upgrades, mostly about how hard they are to get, but no one seeems to say what they do. could somone plese tell me what coning tower upgrades do?

Some of them offer wider angles for AA guns to traverse, some actually add more AA guns or options for diff ones, and some allow for different surface/air search equipment

They were supposed to make the boat less visible on the surface, though I don't know if there's any real effect equated in-game. Like AnthonyW said, it helps provide better visibility with and traversing of the AA guns. Eventually, you'll get offered a choice (or no choice:hmmm:) when you return to Home Port.

Indeed, I experienced several conning tower changes and never once 'felt' that it was making any difference regarding being spotted by other ships or planes.

But in real life it must have made a hell of a difference, as the conning towers in earlier subs had almost twice the area.
