I'm not even joking, first day of the war September 1st a little after 1:00am. CURSE YOU POLAND!

Alright, this thread isn't a rant, just got a story to tell you guys.

So about a week before the war began, I shipped out of Kiel in my beloved Type II and set a course straight for Helo (or was it Holo, or Halo? THE POLISH PORT!)

My plan was this:

Dock at the port
Act like I'm just chilling out, maybe pick up some Polish chicks
On September first....Kill Everything :arrgh!:

Let me tell you, this plan ALMOST worked!

When I get there (August 31st) I see the pickings are rather slim, two v&w class destroyers are docked along with a tramp steamer. That's okay, I'm in a type 2, Three torpedoes, Three ships = PERFECTION!

At about midnight I went to periscope depth and slipped in the harbor. My first targets were the destroyers. Against my better judgment I opted to use the magnetic detonators.

The Destroyers were docked and immobile but their guns were active. I also wasn't as sneaky as I thought I was as every Polish ship in that port had their search beams on looking for me. I targeted the destroyers and fired off my first two torpedoes.

Both hit their mark!

The first destroyer went down almost instantly, the second destroyer took a while (and managed to get a lucky shot off damaging my periscope before it finally went down.)

Now it was time for the Tramp Steamer, Lined up shot, fired, hit.....but no sink.

:damn: I DON"T HAVE TIME TO RELOAD THE TORPEDOES! THE WHOLE BASE KNOWS I'M HERE NOW!

It was about this time I picked up a warship closing on my hydrophone, here comes the cavalry. So, what do you do when you don't have time to reload the torpedoes? You use the machine gun of course!

It took alot longer than I'd like, and half my machine gun ammo was spent, but finally she went down. Now it's time to make like a tree and leave!

(Shortly after sinking the Tramp Steamer, making my attempted escape.)

No time to celebrate though, shortly after I begin my escape run I start being shelled, looks like that warship came sooner than I thought and with a vengeance. I ordered to take her down 25m and lucky for me, this particular patrol craft was not armed with depth charges. It did manage to get a few good hits in before I could dive though, luckily all the damage was repairable and no major flooding was reported.

I slipped away and it looked like I was home free.

(Patrol Craft trying in vain to find me after I dived.)

I did it! I got away! They are looking for me in the totally wrong direction and I'm getting out of there with just a few scrapes and bruises. I can't wait to brag to all the women at the bar when I get back! Free drinks on me!

It was then that my idiotic side saw I was doing a good job and decided to ruin it. After several minutes of fleeing and what I thought was a safe distance from the patrolling ships I thought to myself "I'm in a pretty safe position, I can probably flee on the surface to get away faster."

It wasn't three seconds after I hit the surface that I started getting shelled...not from the patrolling craft either. After a quick order back to periscope depth I looked around to see who my attacker was. At the edge of the port, a third destroyer that I had failed to see when I came in was docked and having a field day using me as it's personal shooting gallery. It didn't take long to get back to periscope depth....and then deeper.....and then deeper....BOTTOM!

That destroyer got off really good hits on me, radio gone, hydrophone gone, engines not responding, flooding on every compartment and pumps failing to keep up. Despite my desperate attempts to stop the flooding. We all drowned on the ocean floor. Me and my 23 brave men, now sitting in our iron coffin at the bottom of the sea.

So, not even two hours after the war began, I was sunk and at the bottom of the ocean. I did manage to take out two destroyers and a Tramp Steamer with me however so it's not all bad I guess.

Now, what's the moral of the story? Well there could be several, don't surface when you are making a clear get away could be one. Avoid attacking ports is another; that one is right in the GWX manual i believe, but I believe the best moral we can all learn from this story is.....The Polish Destroyers of WWII were outfitted with cloaking devices! That destroyer was NOT THERE when I entered port.

And that's my story of the day, hope you enjoyed. Peace out, or whatever you kids say these days.

And this is why careful observation is required for harbor raids.

Reminds me of the time I was nearly killed poking around Alexandria. Destroyers not there one minute, squadron after me the next :k_rofl:

At least you did it on a way that sunk something. How many of us have TC'd out of port and forgot to tell the Nav to follow course? :nope:

I've seen the time I've exited a dock or a pen and forgotten to plot a course
