View Full Version : Cover Song AppreciationThread
This thread is all about alternative versions of favourite songs. Find a cover you like and post it here and tell us why you prefer it over the original, or why the original is better. Only rule is it can't be a version by the original artist, though if you can post the original for comparison that would be OK.
To kick off Sarah Blasko covering Cold Chisel's Flame Trees (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILd1O44BDqc)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0AumNMwohQ
I like the slower pace of Sarah's version but also Chisel's classic rock balladering of the original. For me hard to split but I like both and shows that a good song well sung is a winner whoever does it.
Over to you...

This could develop into a good thread....better then a basic trawl on youtube like another thread I could mention
Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWvQA_-DxPE) comes to mind as probably my favorite cover of the original.
Then there's of course pretty much every cover ever made from Iron Maiden's

Social Distortion, "Ring of Fire":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjQkgZmBjzE
And of course the original, by Johnny Cash:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lhf9U5Wf3Q
Love the original, love the cover. One is an undisputed classic by an undisputed class act, and the other... there's something about the energy of Social Distortion's version that really makes it come alive all over again.
Edit: and not to be outdone in the cover department, here's Johnny doing his take on Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtbuUlSGXzc&playnext=1&list=PL11FC1B7D6211022B
(And the original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBZs_Py-1_0)
As much I loved Chris Cornell in his prime, I almost gotta go with Johnny on this one.

from one of Bruce's best albums, a single man and a 4-track recorder

American Punk classic
Ryan Adams - Nervous Breakdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsta5iIuNBw)

I have copies of House Of The Rising Sun by Woodie Guthrie and Pete Seeger and Leadbelly, all dating to the 1940s. It's a very old traditional song. I have to agree that Joan Baez's voice easily makes her version the best, though I wish she had included more of the many verses.

On the other hand, is that engineer the greatest professional you've ever seen or what? It must take a titanic effort to keep that straight face through this!

Bobby McFerrin covers Cream's 'Sunshine of Your Love'. The fun part is there are no instruments, just him multitracking his voice and doing his own percussion.

The Zoot - Elenor Rigby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_3IUASoqfM)
A ripper of a version IMHO. The Zoot was an Australian band that were together from 1968 to 1971. This clip is their 1970 cover of the Beatles classic 'Eleanor Rigby'
After the band split up, lead singer Darryl Cotton went onto a successful solo career in Australia while guitarist Beeb Birtles (on the right in this clip) became a founding member of Little River Band.
Probably the most successful was Rick Springfield (on the left in this clip) who went to the US and had numerous hit singles including 'Jessie's Girl' and also beame a soapy star in 'General Hospital'.
