Amen! Its my first attempt at a mead. Its mostly honey but with enough strawberry to add some colour and flavour to it.

Do you homebrew too?

What serious?? Haha, I was just guessing. Looked at the picture in a larger size and then I thought it had something to do with chemistry given the shape of the glass. But my first guess was right. lol.
Ah well, I worked in a bar for 7 years, so I guess I recognize a drink when I see it. :03:
But mead, that's some kind of beer right? How'd you make it?

That reminds me. I've got three gallons somewhere around here I need to bottle up.

But mead, that's some kind of beer right? How'd you make it?
Beer is made from grains. Wine is made from fruit juice. Mead is made from honey. Some people add fruit juice to it. I make mine by just adding yeast to a honey/water mixture and waiting a long time.

Walking up to a local bee keeper at a fall festival and buying the gallon jar he has on display is fun. You can tell by the look on his face that he didn't really expect anyone to buy it.

Ah well my English only goes so far.. I always heard mead being used mostly in context with medieval things. Always figured it was just another word for beer. Now I'm curious how it tastes :hmmm:

Thanks to the accuracy of movies and various fantasy games, that seems to be most people's idea of it.

Now I'm curious how it tastes :hmmm:
It varies. I've had some that was syrupy sweet, and I've had some with no hint of sweetness at all. It all depends on the type of honey, yeast, added flavorings, and the person making it. Strawberry is one I haven't had. Yet.

Yup, you were right on the money. The cylinder is used to measure its sugar content so that you can estimate alcohol or remaining sugars in it.

My mead is 14 percent alcohol and is currently bone dry.

Did I ever homebrew? That's an insult! :DL Yep became pretty good at brewing up a concoction of Gorse wine, gorse grows everywhere so it was easy getting the stuff, brewed also the common beer recipes available at the time but Gorse brew was a favorite - had a good kick to it. This was back in my 20's when the homebrew was very popular to us young men everyone up our street was either making brew or help drinking the brew. I gave up homebrew after a few years of experimenting with it cause I drank to much  :rotfl2:

No, I meant fruit. Grape is just the most common, and certain fruits get special names, such as cider for fermented apple juice.

you ever try freezing that stuff, us yankees use call it apple jack, freeze it and tap the core which will be liquid, and it will have a nice kick to it.

What is gorse, oh I thought gorse grew everywhere. Gorse is like a thistle that spreads like wildfire goats love to eat it but apart from goats and gorse wine its an annoying bushweed. Don't know if I would go back to making brew maybe one day when I retire from life I might. Its quite hard when their are many organic beers & wines available now that there is really no need to make brew apart from the enjoyment of making it.

hmm learn something new. I never heard of gorse b4 ^_^ then again, we dont exactly have goats roaming around eating it around here either. I mainly make wine for the enjoyment of making it. For me, drinking it is an added bonus. For me, the enjoyment comes from the pursuit of making the best wine/ mead possible.

speaking of beer ,how long did your's normally take to make?

Around 12-13 days it was ready to drink, but I usually would wait another week or 2. Gorse wine took longer about 5-6 weeks.

There is a well known brewers tale about gorse wine, goes something like this: ;)

Some Gorse wine was spilt on the brewers floor when he retired for the night. In the dark corner crept a wee brown mouse and stood in the pale moon light. He lapped up the frothy brew from the floor, then back on his haunches he sat. And all night long you could hear him roar "Bring on the god damn Cat!"

I consider it to much time consuming to make beer, while spending time to consume it i dont mind at all :) In Holland we (me and my wife) often go (if we go at all:P) to a beer bar (in case there are other Dutch drinkers: Stomme van Kampen (Kampen) and Olivier + Cafe Belgie (Utrecht).

My own hubby is regatta sailing and cruizing the Mediterainian or Southern Atlantic with my wife and friends.
