View Full Version : Mickey Mouse tweet by Egypt's Sawiris angers conservatives
One of Egypt's richest men has been accused of mocking Islam after tweeting cartoons of Mickey and Minnie Mouse wearing conservative Muslim attire.
Telecoms mogul and Coptic Christian Naguib Sawiris apologised for re-posting the images on Twitter a few days ago, saying he meant no offence.

Naguib Sawiris is a leading secularist and recently formed a political party.
But several Islamic lawyers have filed a formal complaint and there are calls for a boycott of his businesses.
The outcry comes at a time of tension between Egypt's Christians and Muslims.
There are also concerns about the growing influence of the ultra-conservative Salafists in Egypt. Salafists take their inspiration from the early generations of Muslims who were close to the Prophet Muhammad and his message.
The tweeted images showed Mickey Mouse wearing a traditional Islamic robe with a full beard, while Minnie Mouse is wearing a niqab - a full-body veil - with just her eyes showing.
She is identifiable by her large ears and trademark pink hair ribbon.
The cartoons were already widely circulating online, but when Mr Sawiris re-posted them last week, he received an immediate angry reaction from people who said they were offended.

I've seen this before, but I thought it was from Hezbollah TV - can anyone read the logo of the station?
I wonder how many naive european supporters of the upcoming "freedom flotilla" have seen this...

I wouldn't say that, especially in today's media age, most infos are just one click or one walk to the library away. So people choose to stay ignorant of facts.
It's more something like selective perception. See only the things you want to see and mute the stuff you don't want to hear. That's were stuff like "Hamas is a organisation that helps the poor" (heard by myself) comes from.

Hamas and many organisations alike use double language.
One for the westerners telling them what they want to hear and another for locals.
When something is made public(like lets say some Ahmadinejad or Nasrallah speeches or whatever)its regarded naturaly as some crazy talk in the west.
Its doesn't matter that millions of locals may take it seriously.
In particular the ones that grew up in the regime.

Yes and it sadly works as it had worked before. :x I am old enough to remember old people sayingstuff like "Oh yes the war and the thing (sic!) with the jews was bad, but at least we all had work..." :damn:
That's why I am not too optimistic, when I see how children are indoctrinated through channels like hamas tv.
The only good thing is that people of today have much more possibilities to get informations, I hope for the Palestinian children that they receive and watch other channels, some without hate.

The exile Iranians who live here are much more committed to educate the public about the Iranian regime than our toothless government is. Good people who value freedom!

It is well reported, it is frequently well reported. But don't let simple facts stand in your way
It was also reported when MEMRI had supplied lots of western news outlets with some very dodgy translations from terrorist TV and they foolishly had run it as news without checking if the translation was bull.:yep:
Silly western media, publishing propoganda without question eh:yeah:
It's more something like selective perception. See only the things you want to see and mute the stuff you don't want to hear.
That fits MH very well, he is very selective in what he wants to see. It is a bunker mentality which is unfortunately all too common in the region
So its good that you admit at least that western media cant sort they news.
Is the translation not corect in this case?
Yes bunker mentality is comon in the region.
I would be very happy to get rid of main but there is theory and reality.
"Bunker mentality" fine word, :D

In what way does that relate to your pure nonsense about it not being covered.
Come to think of it what the hell are you on about anyway?
Is it simple bunker mentality waffling again?
Make your mind up MH are you complaining that the media don't cover negative stories about terrorist organisations or are you complaining that they are too willing to run Israeli propoganda about terrorist organisations without checking its accuracy?
But hey bad timing on your part, the western media just ran another story about Hamas and the gaza protests, unfortunately it turns out it was just another fabrication.
Though in this case it originated directly from your PMs office.
Isn't it funny that not only do the media run the stories you say they don't but they also run the bullexcrement propoganda the Israeli State feeds them as news.
So much for your perception of "reality" :rotfl2:

Oh my, how shocking , a place that some countries don't recognise as a state isn't on some maps!!!!!!!
So Israel has something in common with western sahara north korea taiwan and palestine which means the evil arabs are just like all the other people in the diabolicalcartographical plot:rotfl2:
Before we proceed please tell me which story are you talking about?
Would you like to run through all the media stories you think the western press ran this week which were purely Israeli propoganda?
Then perhaps you could do the simple thing and just go to wednesday mornings news and look for a story out of the PMs office that was exposed as pure bollox.
But its OK they said the fabricated story was unauthorised and they are sort of sorry.
It really comes to something when you have a bunch of pricks like Hamas and people have to invent stories instead of just doing genuine coverage of the idiots:88)

Why are you so often unable to deal with what people actually write and why are you so often completely unable to defend what you have written?
Again and again you do it and end up making silly claims about anti-semitism or how only locals can see. It really does show how your bunker mentality has left you with a view that is so enclosed that you are pretty much unable to see anything yet think that view is superior to those who are not stuck looking through a narrow slit.
Superior is the key word lol

Is that why you lie so often, a sign of your "superior" view?
are you 13 years old or just simply
One generally expects foolish little children to lie as they sometimes don't know any better and are unable to participate on a real level, which clearly puts you right in the kindergarden group.
It explains why you are unable to deal with issues and have to lie so often when you attempt to do so.

Once again you are unable to deal with what is written.
However I must apologise, I previously drew an unfair comparison between you and Dimitrius when it comes to objectivity concerning Israel and the Middle East
He was just a plain hate filled bigot who went on mindless rants.
I humbly apologise to Dimitrius for putting him so low in comparison to MH

BTW you are still unable to address any real subject raised :yeah:

The only hate-filled content in this thread, was in the video from Hamas TV - and I doubt that MH works for them...
And being wrong about something (in this case the BBC coverage) is different than lying :know:
Why not point out a mistake instead of using personal attacks? Way to convince somebody!

The reason being that when the mistake is pointed out MH denies he made a mistake was made and when it is pointed out that his mistake was undeniable he goes on crazy rants.
It really is that simple Penguin.
It wouldn't be much of an issue if he didn't do it so often or if he didn't always follow the same pattern.

Yes it would be, but when they get to the stage of denying they are wrong it makes it nothing but a lie.
If MH said he was mistakenly just repeating falsehoods then fine..instead he went off on one.:yeah:
