The day after the declaration was unusaly calm. People went about their business, knowing what happened the day before, reading from the newspapers but quite not grasping the scope. Except the police, territorial defence and custom officials. Slovenia was prepared, flags have been sown and border signs were produced. Tourists, not knowing they were entering a country old only hours were suprised to see people changing the old Welcome to Yugoslavia signs to Welcome to Slovenia

Belgrade responded. Yugoslav National Army (JNA) was mobilized and given orders to retake border crossings and restore control. Only Slovenian garrisons were mobilised though. Everyone believed that the small Teritorial deffence (TO) forces would yield under the JNA show of force. While the JNA fueled it's tanks and planes, diplomats hoped Ljubljana would reconsider and stop. Their answer came in the evening.

The evening was warm, the nation was on it's feet. In front of the Slovenian parliament building, on the Repbulic Square the Yugoslav flag with one red star was brought down and the new Slovenian flag with three golden stars was raised. The first president of the new country Milan Kucan rewieved the TO guard, knowing that he will need them in the days to come and said the most famous words in the modern history of the nation:

Today we are alowed to dream, tommorow is a new day

TO and police were battle ready, JNA was preparing to strike and volunteers were constructing barricades on all mayor routes from the JNA barracks.

Armed Yugoslav jets could be heard flying over Ljubljana

This was also the day Slovenia was recognized by another sovereign nation.

Croatia declared independence on the sam day as Slovenia and was the first to recognised Slovenia on the sam day Slovenia became the first sovereign state to recognise Croatia. :DL
