On a warm june evening in 1991 an entire nation was on their feet. The long process that began with the referendum of december 23rd, 1990, where 95% of all voters came out and 88% of them voted YES for an independent state of Slovenia, has reach it's climax.
The day started not with a pomp and a marching band, but with a convention room full of politicians and press. They unanimously declared and signed the Fundamental charter of independence, breaking all ties with Belgrade and Yugoslavia and with this constitutional act, which is the starting point of the Slovenian Constitutional System, legally established a single supreme authority on its territory.
Diplomats received instructions, to convince foreign powers to recognize her as a sovereign nation and a declaration of independence has been sent to Belgrade.
A declaration of war was sent back

Part one of my special, 20 years of independence feature, where I'll start a thread every day describing the events of that day that took place exactly 20 years ago, during those hot summer days when Yugoslavia started dying.

Happy Independence day Slovenia, may you always have cause to celebrate them.
Thanks. And I believe the steaks are already marinating for your independence day
I like your flag.
The white, blue and red colors are a symbol of a slavic ancestory (just like Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia.... ). The shield contains the three stars of the three Dukes of Celje, the only Slovenian aristocratic family, wipped out by the Hapsburgs in the 14th century, the three peaked mountain is the Triglav, our highest mountain and nations symbol, the two wavy lines are representing the sea and rivers.
Happy independence day.

Cheers to your independence! :salute:
I am glad that your country managed to seperate quick and with relatively few casualties, unlike other former Yugoslavia states.
The "independence diary" is very interesting , keep it up ! I didn't want to post there, as I don't have much to contribute to the daily events - though as being 18 at this time, I was a witness of these events.
The whole breakup of Yugoslavia is quite interesting to me, as this whole story is somehow stangely interwoven with my personal history.

:o That's German beer!
The one from my region ism the dark one in the small glass!
So having a different brew than the rest of Germany is one of the reasons why we need independence too, lol! :DL
