Nooooooooo!
Classic B-17 down in Illinois. Everybody got out okay, but the plane, well...

I'm due to see two flying B-17s at an airshow this weekend, and this'll certainly be a sad reminder of how few of them are left now...

A World War II-era bomber has crashed in the Chicago suburbs, as authorities try to figure out what caused a damaging fire onboard the craft.
The B-17 bomber, known as a "Flying Fortress," is believed to be the Liberty Belle, a plane that was at the Aurora Municipal Airport 40 miles west of Chicago over the weekend.

Have to admit its a beautiful aircraft, and sad to see one like that. (don't know what I would do if the last flying Lancaster bomber was to crash)

Just read this on an aviation site but at least all seven occupants walked away from it.

This is really sad. But, after all, it is good luck that the crew survived.

I did a hop in Aluminum Overcast a few years ago. It was awesome.
Sad to see a warbird crash, but at least there were no fatalities.

It's interesting that the article says the fire was in #1 engine, yet both wings are intact. I'm curious to read the whole story. Still, I agree it was the proverbial good landing for the crew.
I love the video of the fly-along. My only complaint is that the cameraman didn't to a full 360 sweep from the top turret.

Those are from the link that Jimbuna posted. Does not look like an engine fire to me. Fuel leak maybe?
No matter though. It is a sad loss.
Aaah ****. :damn: At least the crew made it out, looks like a good emergency landing there. :yep:

This is the same B-17 that was badly damaged in the 1979 tornado that destroyed the old Bradley Air Museum in Windsor Locks.
Poor plane must have bad karma. :damn:

I somehow missed those, but you're right. As I said, the full report will be interesting.
