View Full Version : More Common Than You Think

During the past week, I suspect that men and women all over America were texting their paramours: “You did delete those messages, right?” There’s nothing like a scandal to spur reflection about our own missteps, and if sexting is a misstep, Americans have certainly been misstepping.

My recent research with 745 U.S. college students (aged 18 to 25), suggests that sexting is a popular means of sexual communication within both committed romantic relationships and casual sexual relationships.

With committed romantic partners, 80 percent had sent or received sexually explicit text messages, and 60 percent had sent or received sexually explicit pictures or videos. With casual sexual partners, flings or hookups not boyfriends or girlfriends, 70 percent had sent or received sexually explicit text messages, and 51percent had sent or received sexually explicit pictures or videos.

Although men and women sexted with equal frequency, sexting appeared to be particularly appealing to certain types of individuals — those who were dependent on text messaging to navigate their social relationships, and those who were insecure with or emotionally distant from their romantic partners.

For those who communicated often through text messages, sexting was likely a convenient way to engage in sexual interactions. For those who had insecure attachments, sexting may have helped to fulfill relationship needs and demands. This may be especially true for emotionally distant men, who were less likely to call, text or engage in face-to-face sexual conversations with a partner.

"Sexual overtures via text messages reflect our reliance on electronic media, not a rise in porn consumption."

Although men and women sexted with equal frequency That surprises me, i would have thought that the males would have dominated in that statistic.

This may be especially true for emotionally distant men, who were less likely to call, text or engage in face-to-face sexual conversations with a partner.
:k_rofl: Yea, good excuse.

I had a friend at work relate a story of how his daughters were texting to their friends while he was driving them to a movie.

The friends they we're texting to were in the back seat of the same car.

A Female thing! :hmmm:
Here, where i run the restaurant and also out and about, all you see is Females texting texting texting.
Honestly, i hope my daughters, when they get older don't consider a high dose of texting frequency to be of the utmost importance in life. :D

You know... probably did not want your friend to overhear the conversation.

I bought my daughter a smart phone and after watching her for a while thought about throwing it out the window-the phone i mean.:D

I would have thought so too, until this week in the US where all the news has been about certain Male thing in high office tweeting his Thing. :dead:

Like Platapus I haven't texted or tweeted yet myself either. I'm kinda glad of it at this point.

I think I texted once just to see if it worked after I enabled it on my phone. Since then... nada.

A friend of mine, have sometimes a tendency to send me remarks in the text, which would make Sky's record holder here, in this ridiculous amount of text, we're talking about pages in the number of times, :88)

I avoid it like the plague. Unfortunately the guy who runs things in our band likes to do it a lot, which means I find myself texting a couple times a week, which I hate.

On the other hand my total talk time per month is usually not more than 15 minutes, with 150 minutes being very high, and usually only when I spend some time with a friend (USLCPL and I talk once every other month or so, and that will run as much as two hours), but other months I've totalled less than five minutes.

I only ever respond to those received...I never instigate them.

A bit silly really considering my texts are free but there is just something not right to me seeing someone tapping away on their phone in a public place.

Not at all when it comes to my phone. I spend about $20 on air time every two or three months. I only use my phone for work calls mostly. :D
