View Full Version : Crew Fatigue

Hi,
Just started playing SH3 again after a year or two's break and I'm having problems with my crew constantly being tired.
I'm sure there used to be an option to turn this off because it never used to be an issue, but I cant find any trace of that option now.
Assuming this option has been removed in a patch or something does anyone have any tips about how best to manage the crew?
I'm currently stuck in the middle of the North Sea unable to move because I havent got enough men who arent too knackered to work the engines. I left them all to rest for a day but they only worked for a couple of hours afterwords before demanding a return to their bunks!
Any help would be gratefully received.

Ask and ye shall recieve! :)
You need to download SH3 Commander - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=2923
Apart from editing the fatigue model you will soon find it pretty much a must have 3rd party addon.
Enjoy :)

Take Tinman's advice, there are ways to redo the crew fatigue model by editing the game files, but Commander makes it (and a lot of other cool stuff) a lot easier. It will give you a "no fatigue" option plus several other fatigue models to choose from if you don't want to disable it entirely.

Perhaps they formed a union when you weren't looking... :D

Thanks very much for the welcome and the advice.
I've just downloaded SH3 Commander and hopefully installed it all ok with the GWX mod I downloaded last night, now going to see if it all works!
And any unions found on my boat will be mercilessly squashed, have enough of those trying to get to work on London Underground!

If you are playing GWX3 and using Commander make sure you get the special config files Commander needs to give you full functionality with GWX:

SH3 + GWX3, the best combo (IMHO) to play SH3!

Personally, I like the fatigue model. It makes earned medals very valuable, as the more medals you get the less you fatigue. At one point (forget the medal) you don't fatigue at all any more.
To me, it makes the tooth-and-nail struggle to earn awards meaningful, and makes your crew feel very hard-earned - especially when you lose them and have to start over!

I like the concept of crew fatigue, but SH3's setup requires way too much micro-management.
In real life, of course, a CO is responsible for everything, but manages broadly if he/she has good division officers. But in SH3, I am expected to micro-manage crew placement, while not having a thing to do with any other system on the boat.
I mean, my Engineering Officer never comes to me with a problem, yet I am expected to tuck in the radio operator.

All seems to work ok! I did download the special config files for GWX so feeling kind of proud of myself at the moment.
Even did my first little patrol, a 5 day shakedown cruise which went okayish. Couldn't find grid O to patrol but did spend a lot of time sailing about the ships outside of Wilhelmshaven and marvelling at the unfinished Tirpitz. The crew seemed a lot happier and willing to work, they even returned my hat.
Unfortunately I'm likely to spoil it now by asking what is probably a silly question.
I noticed in the map view of GWX that the colours and tails of the contacts are missing, did a little searching and found a mod that puts them back, downloaded the mod and..... now haven't a clue what to do!
The other downloads had an exe file or you could just click on them to install, but with this I unzip it and then..... not really sure what to do next. Should I copy them into, or over, a file or folder? If so, which one?
Any pointers gratefully received.

The Contact Color mod?
This is an easy one (and not a stupid question if you've never enabled a mod before).
First off, you should always be in base when you enable or disable mods. Don't mess with them in the middle of a patrol as you'll be altering the game files, which may make any mid-patrol saves you made crash when you try to load them. (There are some exceptions to this rule, but they are few and far between.)
Now- with GWX you got a program called JSGME - "GME" stands for Generic Mod Enabler.
There should be a folder in your game directory called MODS. I'm pretty sure it will have been created when you installed GWX.
If not, doubleclick on the JSGME icon that should have been installed on your desktop when you installed GWX. When it opens, it will want to create the MODS folder for you. Let it.
Now take the folder you got when you unzipped the mod file you downloaded - which should be called GWX3.0 Contact Color and have one subfolder, called data, inside it - take that whole GWX3.0 Contact Color folder, and move or copy it inside the MODS folder in your game directory.
Now open JSGME again, or go back to it and hit F5 to refresh. You should see GWX3.0 Contact Color in the lefthand window as one of your available mods. Click on it once to highlight it, then hit the little '>' button in the middle. That will tell JSGME to enable the mod into your game, i.e., copy (or overwrite) all the files it contains into the appropriate places in your game directory. It will move over to the righthand window, which means it's been enabled. And that's it!
GWX also comes with several optional mods as part of the installation, so you'll see those in the lefthand JSGME window as well. If you're interested in those, you can consult the GWX manual - you'll have a .pdf file of it, probably in your game directory, in the documentation folder - or just ask here. I wouldn't advise enabling any of them until you know what they do and whether or not you want or need to use them.
