View Full Version : Does Christine Lagarde's sex qualify her to head the IMF?
French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde is one of two declared candidates bidding to take over as head of the IMF. The other is a man. Lucy Kellaway of the Financial Times asks whether Ms Lagarde's gender works in her favour - and whether it should?
When Christine Lagarde launched her bid to be head of the IMF she declared that she would bring to the job all her "experience as a lawyer, a minister, a manager and a woman".
The first three strands of Lagarde's experience are formidable. But what did she mean by the fourth?
What is her experience as a woman? And how does it make her a better candidate for the job?
The most obvious thing that differentiates a woman's experience from a man's is that women bear children.
On two occasions, Lagarde has spent the best part of a year with a growing lump in her abdomen, and then endured the tricky business of getting it out.
For most women this is a very big deal, though it's not obvious how such experience sets anyone up for running the IMF.

Women often confuse equal rights with priviliges. Equal rights mean you'll be processed as a genderles person and hired based on experience and achievements as a genderless person. And not whine about a male conspiracy if you don't get appointed
I am fully aware of this, then it is a natural fit in today society!
Can she wear a maid outfit? :hmmm:

In fact, Jello or whatever she's called doesn't look great in that film, a bit 'dowdy' (not to be confused with Dowly!), so a better one would be...

Ah, these news again. They never get old, they never change. Just recently some highly official equality inspector in here whined that the officer academy's physical tests are unequal, because they set the same requirements for both male and female candidates. Her reasoning was that women are physically weaker, so they should get lower requirements too.
Mind boggles.

This was always a sticking point in the RAF, for the annual fitness test the women barely broke into a fast-jog in the shuttle runs, did press ups against a bench with their knees on the floor, and only did about half as many sit ups. That was equality! :nope:
I'm not having a go at (most) of the women I worked with, because even they could see the irony of this and agreed, however what really p1$$ed us off was the fat, lazy ones that failed this basic of basic fitness tests. Pay the same, do the same, period (no pun intended!).

Similarly in the force....send the guys to the berserker calls whether they were 'paired up' or not and send the ladies only if they had a male pairing.
Pay was the same though.
