View Full Version : Not flying the flag

Hey-ho.
I downloaded SubFlags_0_0_6_byTheDarkWraith, and I installed it in the usual way using JSGME. Seeing a flagstaff but no flag, I checked the Sub eqp files, and the startdate and enddate, though I am not sure what I need to do with them. Also looking into the .dds files didn't help me at all - merely had me reaching for the rum. I guess I need some serious guidance here, if anyone would be kind enough; a complete idiot's guide would be appreciated.

change the startdate to 19380101 and ensure the enddate is 19451230

Hi,
Thanks for the reply (and also for the mod!)
Yes, I had checked the dates, and changed them where necessary. What I'm not sure about is:
1. Do I have to take out the text with your instructions between the linkname and the startdate eg ; if no flag is enabled.....?
2. As I am in a 7b boat at the moment, I did the eqp files for the 3 x 7b boats. Is this right?
I'm sorry if there is something obvious that I'm missing, but I'm not used to going into files yet. Glad to be learning, though.

send me the files and let me know which flags you want enabled and I'll update those files and send them back to you. Then you can review and learn from it

Hi, and thanks again for taking the trouble to help a duffer.
All I am trying to do is to have a bog standard ensign flying abaft the conning tower (like the one I see in Stoianm's tutorial videos). I think the files you want me to send are the ones in the equipment files once I have installed the mod. Here is the partial one for the 7b boat. If this is not what I should be looking at, please let me know. It could easily be that I'm not setting this up right.
Steep learning curve for me, right?

those entries are correct and should show flag #1. What do you have in \data\Textures\TNormal\tex with the mod enabled? Do you see any entries for 7B?

Yes, there is an entry for 7B and for 7B_2

open them up with an image viewer and see what they look like (ensure they aren't blank)

This is where I get really embarrassed. Can you suggest an image viewer I can use to open .dds files? They are not blank anyway as there is plenty code.

GIMP I believe can open .dds files. I use Photoshop so I'm really not much help in this area.

OK thanks. I'll have to try to find something. I may be gone for some time....
Thanks for your patience.

A lot of folk here use Paint.net - with dds add on.
Its free:up:

I don't know whether my previous reply came through. I tried to send a screen dump of what I got when I opened the 7B dds file with Paint.net.
Thanks for the info, Trevally. I haven't yet worked out how to get the add on for.dds, so that might account for the shot.

Sorry TDW,
Sending the screen dump obviously didn't work. What I saw was a shot of the conning tower, and the deck and flak guns. There was some lebelling, but no text to read. The back ground was chequered. Probably because I don't have it set up right yet for .dds.
Trevally.

For instance, a DirectDraw Surface (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectDraw_Surface) file type plugin, (originally by Dean Ashton) and an Ink Sketch and Soften Portrait effect (originally by David Issel) were added to Paint.NET in version 3.10.
If you have v3.10 or higher - dds is in there already:up:

Yep, it's version 3.5.8 I downloaded. I don't know if it is significant, but when I use GIMP to open up the \data\Textures\TNormal\tex file, I don't see any entries for flags at all.
Trevally.

Go to the folder with the flags in them and right click on a flag.dds
select "open with" and then set either GIMP or paint.net
Then when you double click a .dds file - it load your image viewer.

OK thanks, I've set that up now. All I can see on the 7B dds is the conning tower shot, with 3 (untexted) arrows pointing to the two guns and the periscope - no sign of a flag.
I have to sign off now, as I have spent almost 10 hours today bowling on the Berwickshire coast in the teeth of a light breeze, and I am 'cream crackered'. Many thanks to TheDarkWraith, and to Trevally too - and to the 200+ other viewers who have witnessed my distress.
I still like to think we'll get the flag flying yet.

Right. I have been looking around for this flag. The situation at the moment is this:
1. When I open \data\Textures\TNormal\tex, there is no flag under the entry for 7B , nor for any of the other 7 boat options. The picture I am getting is the same as you get in the game when you go to the subsystems menu and choose deckwatch - it shows the conning tower and armament. No flag.
2. There are German flags further down the \Tnormal\tex list - German shows the battle ensign, and German_m has the merchant(and party) flag. These will probably be there because I have the accurate German flags mod installed. Could it be that this is causing a conflict?
3. The \flags\conus00 and \flags\reaper7 folders do have the flags showing correctly, but somehow they are not reaching the link to my boat.
Trevally.

Sounds like you have not installed the mod correctly:hmmm:
From the download - unzip to desktop.
Open first folder to see - "flags" + "MODS"
Open the MODS folder to see "SubFlags_0_0_6_byTheDarkWraith"
This is the folder you must paste into the MODS folder in your SH5 main
Note: to check if a mod is correct in you MODS folder,
open JSGME and before installing - right click and select explore.
You MUST see a "data" folder.
If not - the mod was not ready for installing.
If yes - go ahead and install.

Yep. Cracked it at last. Well done, and thank you very much, Trevally. Now if only I could put back all the hair I have been tearing out.
