He's an idiot. He's supposed to be one of the smartest democrats (as said before this scandal by other democrats). This demonstrates a dangerous lack of intelligence. Note that I'd say the same thing for a pol on the other side who's a creationist (that they are stunningly stupid).

Public displays of stupidity should be political suicide. That's a good thing. That said, I doubt it will have much effect on him, frankly.

No, it would be apt. This kind of behavior is asinine in 17 year old boys. That a US Congressman is doing it means he is as stupid as it gets. I'm embarressed anyone would defend this kind of lunacy, man.

Lee needed to go, he had zero intergrity. Scumbag.

I'm sure much much worse has been done by Congressmen and women over the years. I'm not defending his behavior - it's stupid. It's immature, its all those adjectives you want to put on it. There's no excuse. But should infidelity exclude a member of congress from serving? No. That's something that he and his spouse need to deal with in their personal lives. It's not criminal. There's nothing in the rules of Congress about it. I don't believe it affects his ability to represent his constituents. I guess that's where we disagree. And that's fine. Nothin wrong with that. :salute:

McCain was guilty of it, and no one had a problem with him running for president. Rudy Guiliani. Newt Gingrich. John Ensign. All adulterers. All kept their job and/or ran for or were elected to higher office. And for the record, I don't think their infidelities should have kept them from doing so.

The double standard is what's embarrassing. All this false outrage from Team R and the calls for him to resign are pure hypocrisy.

tater
06-06-11, 11:09 PM
I don't think there should be a LAW against being stupid. If congress wants to enforce ethics above and beyond the law, that's their business. Regardless, I think a party that doesn't consider stuff like this as a disqualifying character flaw are broken.

Note that if the congressman has been privy to any classified information, this IS disqualifying to hold a clearance. For a clearance they don't care so much about what you do in public. It's secrets that bug them because it is a point of possible extortion against you. Any congress critter with so much as a mistress is a serious security threat.

Well, we can disagree, I think infidelity is criminal.

And I'm not standing by either party, when it comes to this kind of bonehead behavior, they should be ejected. But as far as "false outrage", I always see a LOT more of that from the Democrats. For example, they sure have been quiet about the Iraq war for the last few years. At least the Republicans aren't whining up a stink about Libya. I wished our country allowed votes of non-confidence.

To me, the appropriate action is for his district to hold a special election. If the citizens in his district vote to keep him in congress, there you go. He is THEIR representative in congress. If they vote no, then he should be removed.

This would be problematic as I also understand there is a redistricting underway and his district may be split up.

Unfortunately our system does not allow for such voting. Probably would be a bad thing. Consider having a confidence vote for your congresscritter? There would be a confidence vote every single week for every member of congress. :D

Talk about term limitations! :D

In any case, there are only two bodies whose opinions should matter in this case.

1. The House of Representatives as a whole as he is a member of that chamber.

2. The citizens of district 9 as he is their representative

He's gonna resign.

This is a good thing. The trouble with him was NOT "sexting." It is that doing so is a huge character flaw given that he's married (marriage is a public vow of fidelity, so it is dishonorable to violate it). Also, it's a serious security and transparency issue.people in Congress are privy to sensitive information, as well as decisions regarding spending. Someone with a secret life is very vulnerable to extortion. The fact he kept lying, even after he admitted stuff shows how easy it would have been to extort him... "vote our way on the finance bill and we'll not go public."

"vote our way on the finance bill and we'll not go public."Agreed. I think the lying did him in far more than the activity. Marriage vows certainly are sacred in my opinion, but that's an issue for him and his wife to resolve. His problem stems from the fact that he knew he screwed up and, over what is ultimately quite petty, he became so emotionally invested in the lie that he was vulnerable to coercion.

Maybe other than this misstep Weiner is squeaky clean - but should we risk it? I say no, and I'm happy he's resigning.
