The best place to be when the war starts?

Hi there Subsim forums!

I finally installed SH3 again after years and years... I had almost forgotten this awesome game. I noticed the GWX mod and naturally installed that too and now after ploeing through the tutorials I 'm ready to sink some ships... with manual tdc of course :cool: but not with ultra realistic settings, I still like to have a nice free camera to look at the pretty graphics and a few map aids.

Now obviously the question is that when the war breaks out, where should I be? What would be the best place, sneaking into a harbor at night and waiting for the war to start (could get hot fast quite obviously) or perhaps head to the small coast of Poland to catch any unprepare allied shipping? Or maybe just sticking to the regular plan of going to a known convoy route just west of the british isles... or perhaps try a bold attack against a big ass british warship sitting stationary in Scapa or another big allied base?

What are your experiences and advice I ask you, the almighty bearded seawolves of Subsim? :arrgh!:

Ideally on some Caribbean beach would be the ideal place to begin, and end, the war.

I don't know how good the Polish coast is, I believe there is a mod for the Baltic Sea campagn, I think one is in GWX but there is another somewhere.

Apart from that AM69 sounds good, can't put my finger on exactly where but I'm guessing it's the Irish Sea or The Minch area :yep:

In September 39 the east coast of England is as good a place as any.

Once I cheated and waited inside Dover. ASW patrols were noted for patterns, exact locations of nets were determined and nice targets were picked out. I decided to stare at a light cruiser from about 500 m away. The second the harbor icons went red... NOTE: you can't be submerged everywhere in Dover! You just might destroy one of your propellers...

I WAS originally going to wait in Scapa, but there was nothing of interest. Lots of destroyers and one small troop ship.

I prefer letting them come to me rather than chasing them all over the Atlantic. BE33 or AM43 are pretty good places to lurk. :yep:

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone :D

After a lot of strange technical difficulties (the campaign crashed before it could even load the first mission until I disabled all the mods :hmmm:) I finally managed to get the show started. I opted for the East coast of the British Isles and with pretty good success: about 18000 tons sunk in the period of 6 days, total of 7 merchants sunk and one close call with a torpedo boat. I'm ashamed to admit that my first eels went far off their targets... even in the most optimal weather and circumstances. I still have a fair bit to learn using the TDC, feels like a hit or miss, sometimes the eels hit right where they should while sometimes in the same conditions they just go way off :damn:

Oh well, I'll learn... I'd better!

A great place to start the war. Always good for 20K.

I also like the strait between the Hebrides and Scotland... usually good hunting, and you pop out at the bottom right in the middle of the convoy path.

BDU has my next patrol slated for BF19 (in a IX).
Think I'll check my old hunting groung, near the point where BF13 & BF15 meet.
A-little more dangerious, but with better prospects.

We shall see. Could be a bit, risky as it is sometimes patrolled by the DD, but they are not as common as early in the war.

We all learn to crawl before we walk and (hopefully one day) run. Just hang in there and keep practicing. Patience, perseverance and practice are the keys. Keep at it and before you know, you'll be an old pro! :rock:
