Ok so, was tasked to sneak into Manila Harbour and photograph enemy carriers. Great says I, chance to nail some enemy flattops at anchor.

Snuck my way in past loads of destroyers and was approaching a couple of Escort carriers sitting at anchor.

I'd been stopping my engines and making like a hole in the water whenever a destroyer came close.

And yet it seems, even with your engines off if a destroyer gets TOO close (and sods law one of them did come too close), they somehow instantly know you are there. That cannot be right surely, is it a flaw in the game?

Doesn't take a genious to work out what happend to the USS Seawolf in the shallows of Manila Harbour!!! :(

You didn't say, so I'll ask.
Were you rigged for silent running?

Looks like, basically, that he saw you, pure and simple. Submerged subs are visible from a short distance, even if submerged. TMO trims the graphics in such a manner that you can see that for yourself.

Went to the harbor and patrolled the entire bay, and I could not find and carriers.

Can anyone help?

Anyways, if you run around the pacific for a while, you're bound to run into some carriers! :03:

Have you ever read what Ducimus posted about DD sensors?
I doubt that they saw you. Their capabilities are a simplification, which leads to odd results.

Lies!

I've been playing this game since it came out, and the Japanese carriers are as fictional as the Flying Dutchman or the Yamato. There's no such ships in this game. :nope:

My guess it's only in stock, RSRD nerfed it, but you can add it back.

What's with the screenshot of the empty ocean?

Honestly, in all the years the game has been out, I've never seen it. Stock, TMO, RSRD, never seen it. I've sunk the one battleship I've seen. I spotted a couple of carriers once. I even got sunk by a sub recently. But I've never seen the Flying Dutchman.

Try getting stuck in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Intense. I sank the Yamato, even tho it took 10 well spaced torpedoes.

Awesome!

And it sounds about right. Yamato and Musashi both took a lot more than that, but it could have been overkill, and ten might have done it.

It's in stock for sure, in the Luzon area, not sure if TMO nerfed it as he made some traffic changes, RSRD did for sure.

If you want to see it, use the ME and and create a single and add it to traffic, it's listed under the Netherlands as a BB named "What is this" or dis, first one listed

But that would be cheating.

Maybe one of these days I'll get to see it.

Just saying if you use RSRD, you'll never see it, was a stock thing. So if you want to see it, you can add it back in to traffic or just create a mission to see it.

They probably hit you with sonar, did you hear them pinging? The sonar is basically always on, even if you don't hear it. You will only hear it if you get within the sonar cone, being shallow and you said one got close, that seems possible. DD's can also listen if stationary and you have other sound factors other than engines they can hear. Silent running cuts the enemies hydrophone values down, not off, so even engaged your sub has some sub signature.

What I'm not sure of is can the enemy listen why they're engaged and if their speed effects sonar. Sometimes with TMO sure seems like it as they sometimes come towards you obviously searching, but you're not being pinged or near the sonar cone. However, it's always been stated they can only ping or listen. Heck, I'll start another topic and see if I can ever get someone to answer, ain't asked in a long time.

I don't really care if I see it or not. I've never really been one to worry about hunting down easter eggs, so if I see it, I see it, if not, oh well. Personally, I think there's other things the devs could have spent time on...

I never saw the flying dutchman too. Only via screenshots here in the forum.

Quite frankly, it was quite a stupid thing from the programmers part, to include such an easter egg in the game. Ghost ships. Huh!

This is where I got the monster.

"Well it's Oct. 24 early morning and my stake out has worked.
On my radar I pick up dd and behind I see a rather large fleet.
Location, 121.50 by 12.40 N time is 8:02 AM.
As I work my way the air attacks begin at 9:02 and before you know it there is large, and I mean large number of downed air crew.
By the time the lead dds have passed I come up from 52 meters and there is my dream target. Yamato, she took six hits suffered internal explosions."
