View Full Version : What is the "best"/"favorite" U-Boat

Hey so I have been playing a bit of SH3 lately, and have been going through a career still only about to be in 1940. I was wondering what people thought is the coolest, most enjoyable U-Boat to use in SH3.
I want to exclude the Type XXI because by far it would be the best boat but it comes out so late in the war that I find it to be a pipe-dream.
Also I realize that certain U-Boats only were used in certain ways, I'm planing on staying in an Atlantic Flotilla that participates in patrolling US waters, but that could change.
thanks for input
XXI or IXC.IXD2 fits well in many situations, :yep:

I like both the VII and IX. The VII for it's maneouvrebility, and the IX for the range plus amount of torpedoes. Also the type IX looks the best imo.
The type II I find too limiting. It's a matter of taste, but it's just not for me. The IXd2 and XXI are too 'advanced' for my taste.
In a career I typically use a VII until the IX becomes available in '41. And once I manage to survive '43 (I haven't ever survived '43 yet) I'll get back to the VII.

Best? Good question. If you're going out into the North Atlantic then the best is probably the Type VII, due to its manueverability, which includes being able to dive quickly.
For long-range operations you need the Type IX. It's slower to dive and turn, but it carries a bigger payload and you'll be in less well-protected waters, so the negatives won't matter as much.
My personal favorite? The Type II. Why? I don't know, I just like it. It's cute.

Thanks for the input
I am sorta interested in picking up a type IX-D2 and putting a quad AA gun on it lolz don't know why but i like big guns.
Also, I've used the type VIIB a lot so it would be interesting to try a type IX sub.
Is there any flotilla where I could start out with a type IX-D2 later in the war?

My personal favorite? The Type II. Why? I don't know, I just like it. It's cute.
Cute? :hmmm:
How about stealthy or deadly or quick or sleek or any of a hundred other adjectives? But cute?
I can almost hear the designers rolling over in their graves. :haha:

I think it's cute, kind of reminds me of a rubber duck....armed with torpedoes. :arrgh!:

Now, back to the question. I like the VIIB. Of course I've never played long enough before I started tinkering with mods all over again to "upgrade" to a VIIC, much less a IX.
Although during recent tinkering, I had occasion to load several test patrols in both a IX and a II. I have to say the look of the IX was quite impressive, probably in large part due to Aces' Super Turms stuff. Never really took it out for a spin, though.
I spent quite a bit of time (relatively speaking) with the II, altho not in combat situations, and I think that describing it as "cute" seems pretty spot-on to me. I can see where one would develop a certain affection for it. :yep:

I like my IX. Fast on the surface, long range, powerful deck gun, generous helping of torpedoes.

Kapitan Schlag -
From October 1942, Bordeaux was the home base for the 12th Unterseebootsflotiile, which was created there under the command of Korvkpt. Klaus Scholtz.
The base became the home of most of the supply boats. The Milk Cows of type XIV, the very long range boats of type IXD2, the type XB mine-layers, and the type VIIF torpedo transports were stationed there.

Nah, none of those. Short-ranged, under-armed, shallow-diving, not really much to recommend it.
But definitely cute. :/\\k: :D

Thanks all.
Raptor, thanks for your info, I may run an extra career starting in 41 or 42 (41 to build up my renown for IXD2)

....powerful deck gun....
Here we go again...
Moving on, I'm going to have to say VIIB is creeping back onto my favourites list. II was there for a while, but I feel it is time for a break. Don't want to be sick of the sub for when U-BOOT_HAHD comes out :D

I have done all my campaigns in a VII B. Why? I was too lazy to swap. Now I feel really comfortable with the VII B. It is like using the same old car for decades.
For a quick single mission, I use the boat that is offered by the single mission design, belonging to date / location. But it does not feel the same....

My favourite is a VIIC. It's quite good at turning, fast at diving, dives as deep as anything else and has a torpedo load that can cause a lot of havoc. I feel that IX's are not as safe and type II's are too weakly armed and short ranged. Type VII is a good compromise that destroys anything in any kind of waters up to 1942 and after that gives one some slim chance of surviving.
(And it's cute.)

At first I took this duck as pretty harmless. Then I thought that at least the duck has one of the main principles of warfare to it's side: surprise. No one expects a cute duck to be of any danger.
Come to think of it this duck is better armed than a type IXC - it doesn't have to reload it's huge, powerful looking beak. I bet it just rips battleships to pieces with it.
And it's got better endurance - it can refuel itself just by fishing something to eat.
However the duck can't dive too well. That's why I plan to stick to my VIIC, for now. :arrgh!:
Ducks are good at flying, though... Should I switch to IL-2 Sturmovik and choose this duck as my airplane... I really have to consider this one:hmmm:

maybe useful as a Trojan Horse, eehm Duck?
After all the crews of the Homefleet found out that there was not a single German uboat trying to raid Scapa Flow for a fortnight or so, they noticed a mighty grand yellow rubberduck floating towards the southern entrance of the Scapa Flow Bay... The rest is history
