There are some who thought, prematurely, that 2010 was New York’s summer of the beer garden, what with the World Cup and the opening of a half-dozen outdoor, German-style drinking establishments. But not unlike some genetically altered superweed, these ale-and-oompah joints have continued even this year to crop up everywhere you look. They have grown so thick, so fast, that certain neighborhoods (Astoria in Queens and Williamsburg in Brooklyn come to mind) could, with the proper vantage and the help of several pilsners, be mistaken for Bavaria.

It would seem that last summer’s sprouting of beer gardens is about to turn into this summer’s beer garden jungle.

There are now no fewer than 54 beer gardens in the city, according to Beer Gardens NYC, a nine-month-old iPhone application dedicated to tracking the phenomenon, and that does not include some that have been announced but are not yet open.

54 for a large city like NY is nothing compared to European standards. In may area there's probably more than that!

It is just a New York City trend it will die out sooner or later it wont last like they have in Europe.I doubt anyone who has really been to Bavaria or anywhere in Germany for that matter would get confused.I have only been to a few places in the US that really felt "German" to me most feel cheesy not like real Deutschland and I was stationed there and saw real Germany not
National Lampoons. Bad Durkheims Wine Fest is so much better than October Fest which is very touristy at Bad Durkheim I got drunk with the person who made the wine they where selling. Not to mention all the local festivals different German towns have.

I'm surprised the NYers have taken so long to understand the pleasure of drinking out doors. Mind you, given what they normally drink, its probably not that surprsising.:D

Sydney has some of the best beer gardens I've been to:

Something that I never understood when I was stationed in Germany was how some guys would simply go to the PX and buy ----ty American beer.:nope:
They where normally the same ones who stayed on base most of the time
what a shame you get to live in another culture for at least two years (for free) and you learn nothing about it.Beer Gardens where just one part of German culture that I liked and the beer actually has taste which is nice.

I loved Germany in fact I tried to land a civilian DoD job at my base when I was leaving the Air Force but some other jerk beat me out. Well he was a 20 year Air Force and he just retired and DOD favors them for jobs over others. That job payed $100,000+ I'd would have stayed in Germany for many years if I'd have landed that job.I think lots of US military guys "go native" in Germany. Many black guys I knew preferred Germany to the US especially.Dont get me wrong I like the US but I dont know how to explain it really Germany just felt like home to me and still does I guess it was the country side I like the woods.

I think Im getting of topic sorry.

I'm not too keen on the cities but the towns and countryside is really very nice...not to mention some of the best beer you can get in Europe.

Same here I liked the smaller towns and countryside the most.I used to get up early on Saturdays and ride my mountain bike from the base up into the hill trails and ride from village to village along the trails and stop in a little beer garden or restaurant when I got hungry or thirsty.

This what I love about Germany. The second picture was in a small meadow that sloped up hill I was walking my bike along looking at the ground and when I looked up and a huge Elk buck was standing there grazing and he looked up at me I could see the steam come from his nose he so close how he did not hear me I'll never know he just looked at me and ran up the hill into the forest and I took the picture of the tree tops when I got my camera out.I have hunted for many years in the US and I have never gotten so close to a wild animal before he was only a few feet from me.

Everyone knows what a beer garden looks like so I thought I'd show something that some people who go to Germany never see.

We have a clear cherry brandy, but brandy is the google translate for schnaps. Schnaps is usually made by fermenting small pears (tepke) or plums. Cherry schnaps is harder to make (cause cherries are harder to obtain) and is more expensive, but also of better taste.

First I've got to pick them and then ferment them. We'll have the first litres in february :03:

If I can fill an entire 200l barel for fermentation, maybe 15 litres at best distilled. That's 80-90%. The I dillute it with spring water to about 50% or 60%. 40% for people that my father or mother want me to give them. It's a protocolar gift mostly, birthdays, birth of a child etc. Those 2 cherry trees barrely fill one barrel (last year the yield was so small, I had no schnaps), so I can't really go into commercial production.

Maybe I'll make 5 bottles for: best of Subsim 2011 :D

Several dirty foreigners were caught after a burglary into the garage of one of our honourable citizens. The intoxicated subjects, one of them dressed as a feathered creature, were uttering gibberish words like "subsim meet" and "cherry brandy". After interrogation by the British Inquisition, these criminals testified to be members of a terror organisation, lead by a man named Neal S.
