Thanks to the dog Cairo scoring some fame in the Bin Laden raid, fortunes are looking up for these unsung heroes!

In past generations, most military dogs were euthanized once their tours of duty were done.

...

"These dogs are fully trained, are worth probably $40,000 to $50,000 each at least, and it's a dog that has been saving American lives. It's kind of a hero in a way."

Cool idea - I think these mutts have definitely done a lot to earn a good home. Looks like a lot of them will get it now.

I hope they get good homes and that the authorities giving them are strict when analyzing the applications. Believe me, I know exactly the kind of person that would try to "adopt" one in a heartbeat. The same kind of person to whom I wouldn't entrust even a hamster, let alone a dog, let alone a big dog with training or not.

Well, it sounds like they already have more applicants than dogs, which is a good sign. I'm sure the adoption agencies aren't going to just give these dogs to unqualified people. You do have to take the "War Dog" title carefully, of course - anyone who doesn't understand what that means and gets the mental image of some mad murdering canine should definitely be banned from owning any kind of dogs in the first place.

As far as I'm concerned, people should by default be banned from owning any kind of dogs unless they have passed some sort of test. Owning a dog is not a civil right but a privilege. It's a freaking living being, it shouldn't be taken for granted that anyone can take care of one. Especially when a dog can easily be dangerous as well and there are people out there who specifically want them to be dangerous. Or I think the correct definition would be "mentally retarded like their owners". Dogs with a proper special training are of course a different matter.

OK, end of rant. I trust the agencies know what they are doing. And keep hoping that one day this scenario from a comic (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0140.html) would become reality.
