Under another topic (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=183836) I was discussing that in my installation of SH3/GWX, when a neutral or friendly ship are spotted my TC only drops to x8 (enemy ships drop to x1) thus giving me the advantage of knowing whether a ship is enemy or neutral without actually identifying it. I checked my Commander TC settings and noticed that the entry for "When enemy ship spotted" was set to x8. I thought that odd as TC drops to x1 in game for enemy ships. Anyway I changed the setting to x1 and started SH3. Now all ships including neutrals when spotted drop to x1 TC. Problem solved I thought, but unfortunately when neutral or friendly ships are spotted TC drops to x1 but I don't get the verbal notification from my WO. I do get the verbal notification when enemy ships are spotted, so I still know without getting close that a ship is neutral or enemy.

I have concluded that when enemy ships and planes are spotted it is somehow hardcoded in the game to drop TC to x1. The Commander setting, even though it specifies "enemy ships", only affects neutral and friendly ships.

What do others think?

Mine behaves the same way. If I lose the initial contact in the haze and then reacquire, the watch officer speaks up normally.

Yes, if you are at x1 TC then the WO behaves normally.

I don't have GWX (heavily self modded), whereas most players here do.

My best guess would be, that there lies the difference.

Anytime my watch spots a plane I'll hit the pause, and then resume at real time (no TC) to see what is in the air. If I get lucky and its a Swordfish I'll start shooting them down and begin hunting for the carrier. Depending on which flak gun(s) I've got and if its a recon plane that is spotted I'll usually dive unless I've got some larger flak guns; too often the basic 2mm ones aren't enough to down some of the larger planes no matter how many times you hit em.
