So if I understand this right, the problem was when he continued to talk while God save the Queen was playing

Odd thing is...why was the anthem started when Obama was not finished with his toast? Looks to me like the band screwed up protocal!

Yeah, the band prolly thought the pause in Obama's speech was the actual end of the speech.

Or maybe Obama added something to the end, that wasn't in the original speech.

Dunno.

They borrowed the band from the Oscars telecast. :O:

I watched this live (sad bugga that I am) and that is the only reason I can think of.

I did notice she said something like "That's or your very kind" at the end of his speech though.

Guess we'll just have to wait until someone releases their memoirs before we find out.

I could be wrong but as far as I know the British press haven't picked up on it :hmmm:

The fault is to whoever decided to play the music while US president was still in the middle of his toast speech.

What he did was an insult to a US president and hence to all Americans.

I'd be more insulted as an American if be bowed to her. We fought a war with them so we would not have to do that.

Good to hear then.

The incident is a matter of slighted ego and slighting the ego of the head of government on official visit is not actually a friendly gesture, purposely or otherwise. US president no less was made to look like a goof.

How would you feel if the same thing happened to you say in a friend's marriage party? When you're making toast speech a music is suddenly played and everyone stopped listening and you're forced into silence and embarasment.

If they aren't bothered doing that to US head of government then I guess that shows how they view the average Americans or US in general. Even when it was unintentional or was a mistake.

Yes it may seem like it was no big deal but it actually is a big deal because the head of government is involved here, and from a respected sovereign no less. But now if that kind of thing happened to Singapore head of state or government or any other crook government I'd apply for British citizenship.

On the otherhand a simple 'sorry' would suffice to ease Obama. He would need that.

Well watching CNN now I realize the Queen toasted after the Hymn.

I think the youtube clip was cut before that.

Not that bad at least not as bad as if the Queen didn't raise the glass afterwards :DL.

Not at all, the president made an error and the band made an error, no one was slighted and any supposed ego that fragile should be wrapped in cotton wool and locked in a dark place.

Sorry for what??????????

That was the queen humiliating herself.
Simple protocol, do you understand any of it?

I'd be more insulted as an American if be bowed to her. We fought a war with them so we would not have to do that.

For not raising the glass.

I thought no one raised their glass afterwards.

Now that I really don't understand.

Well here you're not getting it. The queen is a traditional monarch while Obama is an eloquent politician. A traditionalist may weigh protocol more important than anything else much like the Catholic church emphasizing ritual over spirituality. But a politician would weigh people more important than any protocol. The band or whoever that started that hymn is the one to be blamed however because it started while Obama was still speaking and thus it was a rude interruption. it's not like he was going to start a long speech or anything. The conclusion? British monarch function are rigid and inflexible the opposite of most politician character that put people first than protocol when dealing in their business. Why? because politicians need to deal with pressing issues everyday that make them to have to deal with people in order to solve them. That is if they are real politicians and not some sorry ass dictators who rely on money, terror, torture, violence and assassinations.

I understand the comments, they don't make any sense though in relation to the events.
For not raising the glass.

At what point? when he toasts the queen or when he toasts the queen? the mistake was he did it twice and missed out on the simple order of things.

I thought no one raised their glass afterwards.

I think you didn't look.

Now that I really don't understand.
Simple protocol.
One person stood who shouldn't have, but at least she remembered not to drink the toast

Well here you're not getting it
Really? you seem well out of your depth.
Like for example..... The band or whoever that started that hymn
Hymn???????? national anthem, you know the tune that comes in when someone proposes a toast to the head of state.

it started while Obama was still speaking and thus it was a rude interruption.
Other way round, once he said five little words it was him who was interupting the band.
it's not like he was going to start a long speech or anything
Completely irrelevant.

The conclusion?
The conclusion you have is wrong, a formal function is a formal function

Yes, though I am sure there was outrage when Reagan made his wife cover her head just so they could meet some head of state without offending protocols over religious sensiblities.

Takeda Shingen

So it appears that the protocol is that no one may toast before the Queen lifts her glass. What I see as the problem is that the individual on the White House staff who's job it is to brief the President in such matters as to avoid embarrassment did not do his or her job. Of course, the President's detractors will use this to attack him, as we have seen from individuals in his thread. To the rabid neo-conservative, this is not a mere error in the protocols of royal society; it is another sign of the Apocalypse as perpetrated by their hated political rival.

Soon, Mr. Camping. Soon.
