Get your rifles and pitchforks and join in the Great SUBSIM Spam Hunt of 2011!

Here's how to flush those pesky spamhos out into the open:
Go to the member list and sort by descending Join Date, this link should do that for you. (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/memberlist.php?&pp=50&order=desc&sort=joindate)

Now, scan the names, using your savvy spider sense to pick out the spammers. Names like Kpt. Grey are probably legit. Names like coupons2000 and jewelryfree are probably spammers. Now, you do this a while and you begin to see how these guys work. They like odd names combined with numbers, like Juanbell225 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=277902).

Go ahead and check out Mr. Soon-to-be-nuked Juanbell225 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=277902). Here's how to tell if he is a spammer: There are two key tabs to check


About me - check for spam links
Contact Info - check for a spam homepage
If you find either of these, please post your kill here, like this:

I will verify your kill and then nuke the spammer into oblivian.

I suggest looking for members in the last six months, but there could be a legit spammer camped out for years back, who knows?

This hunt will continue until Sunday 2200 CST. The guy with the most legit kills wins a SUBSIM shirt and kitchen magnet. The guy with the OLDEST spam find will win a SUBSIM mug.

Thanks for your help! Let's make those spammers suffer, and by removing their links, they will have wasted their time and it will make Subsim less attractive to future spammers.

Great find. Most of these spammers will have 0 posts. They simply want the links on the server somewhere, and the search spiders will give them credit for a link placed, and that's how they make their money.

I reported both the fortworthplumbing.infon and influxseo.com as spammers, said there are hundreds of links in our forum and other forums in the network.

Feel free to post an abusive report to GoDaddy, it only takes 20 seconds and I love hitting back at these spammers! :rock::rock::rock:

That was one of the spam sigs. I called the poor receptionist and told her to let the owner know that the SEO he hired is spamming the hell out of the world. That SEO is listed on the bottom of his site as http://www.influxseo.com/



Yeah, by spamming the world. There needs to be stiffer penalties for this crap. I am going to report these two...to someone, if I can figure out who. :stare:

Neal, if I had to clean up the database, I would go for all the accounts which have:

last activity = join date and
total posts = 0 and
downloads = 0 and
uploads = 0

there should be a value for last activity/join date

I would say until 2011, 1st of January, for example.

Meeting all these criteria, I would not expect any activity in future time. That would make a couple of thousands...

Neal, if I had to clean up the database, I would go for all the accounts which have:

last activity = join date and
total posts = 0 and
downloads = 0 and
uploads = 0

there should be a value for last activity/join date

I would say until 2011, 1st of January, for example.

Meeting all these criteria, I would not expect any activity in future time. That would make a couple of thousands...

The registration is now linked in to an NSA spam database that will block 97% of the spamho's before they can check "I agree with the terms of this foru...".

I've added a new Spam WMD that will alert the moderators when a new member joins with spam in his sig or homepage, even before he has a chance to post.

My server tech just upgraded my automated backups, so the entire domain and forum db are copied.

I've made a second copy of the 2.3GB forum db to use as a test platform.

I have just tested a magnificent 3-part MySQL script on the test db for a 2 year segment of users and it took 1364 spammers and put them in the spammer usergroup to be pruned.

Almost there. I think we're at the 97% spam free threshold. I've run all my queries, to the point where I am picking off the odd spammer who is outside the normal bounds (logged in 10 days later, made 2 posts, etc.)
