I have a modern system that should be able to handle everything SH4/TMO/RSRD can throw at it (FalconNW Mach V, Intel I7 975 CPU@ 3.46 GHz, 12 Gb RAM, 256Gb SSD, twin ATI Radeon HD 5800 series SLI cards w/256 MB each, Creative SB X-FI sound, etc., running under Win7 Pro 64-bit) but have encountered something I can't explain or work around.

At approximately 0400 hours on August 17, 1942, 3850 yards due West of 25-50N, 136-00E, my Gato class USS Drum encounterd the large Task Force heading from the Japanese Home Islands to Truk. There were at least 2 Shinano class fleet cariers and numerous heavy cruisers and escorts. The second and third ships in the middle column are the fleet carriers, and I was positions approximately 1,000 yards to the east, careful to keep my bow to the leading escort. As the escort passed I backed slowly with hard right rudder until I was near-perpendicular to the column's course line. As the first carrier came into my 25 degree arc, I let go with 4 Mark 14's.

When the first torpedo struck and exploded, the game froze! I have tried this interception at least 4 times, each time starting with a new mission from Pearl, or from an intermediate loaded save-game, all with exactly the same results. I have updated to the latest Catalyst video drivers, and turned the video settings to the lowest possible (ok, not below 1080-768 resolution), but nothing can change that when that first torpedo strikes the game freezes. :damn:

Has anyone enountered such a thing? Is there anyone who also runs TMO2.1/RSRDC patched who would be willing to try the same intercept and get me the results? I hate to pass on the opportunity to bag one, or maybe even 2 fleet carriers in a single pass!

Thanks in advance for the help, Captains.

Is that the only two mods you're running?

Not a TMO2.1/RSRD issue. I do recall one mod that caused this issue, but don't remember the name.

They're are no two Shinano class carriers in RSRD in that area at any time. Shinano only shows itself the one time in the game taking the historical route late war. Did you actually ID 2 that showed on the ID block. If so, something is wrong with your mods, maybe that's the problem, have you played with anything?

Do you have DX9c loaded, game needs that?

I've had similar issues, though not identical at times. I've found the best course of action (sadly) is to just skip the target and move on. Also, the issue isn't limited (for the record) to the Shinano-class ships, but just about any ship under the right circumstances.

I tend to agree with Armistead, especially in light of the fact that you're see a Shinano class CV in 1942. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-think005.gif The only other thing I can think of is the GPU temperature. Have you fiddled with the cooling fan settings lately?

I appreciate the rapid responses!

First, let me clarify - I mis-identified the carriers: They are Shokaku class, not Shinano.

Next, I am on Dx11. Dxdiag.exe reports no errors in video or sound.

Have not made any changes to hardware or software; computer is not overclocked, and event occurs at all hours of local day or night and at various ambient room temperatures.

Here is my complete list of mods, in the order installed:
TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2
TMO_Update_20_to_21
RSRDC_TMO_V502
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
RSRDC_TMO_Pre Pearl Harbor Career Start
Pre-PH Mod Patch
PhotoRec_Fix_TMOall&Stock
Fixed Zero Bomb Load RSRDC
Fixed_CD_sonar_RSRDC
IJN_Radar_Fix_for_TMO2_v1
MaxOptics IV for TMO_2
New_Large_Lifeboat
SonarTargetFix2_TMO
Stop the Shouting
Webster's No more Cheers
40mm Cannon Training

My realism settings are 75% - I don't use manual targeting and do allow map updates (I'm basically lazy when it comes to math).

Any and all suggestions and advice are greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

You need the DX9c on the game disc for the game to work. I also have DX11 with Windows7. The 9c will only update files the game needs, not overwrite the DX11. Also look in the Downloads section for the 4gig patch. All this dose is allow SH4exe to have access to more memory. For me, and others here this has cured some mysterious freezes and crashes.

Here's a link to the 4gig patch http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=2889

Like Fish40 says, make sure you have direct X9 installed. You may also want to check your graphic settings in the ATI control panel. Maybe try turning down your AA settings, see if that helps or not.

It's odd that the lockdowns always happen when the target explodes.

Have you tried to take down some notches on the graphics settings?

Yes, I lowered the resolution to 1080x760 and turned off every effect, with the same results.

I will try the 4Gb patch, and also the Direct9xc and advise.

Thanks again, everyone!

Thanks for the advice, Capt. Von Trapp. I only tried tuning down the graphics in the SH4 Options section. I'll try the ATI settings next.

Have you tried backing your mods out. I would try with nothing but your TMO RSRD setup. You'll have to start a new patrol using last base save, but I question a few mods. I run many more mods than you, but tested each one, but you ought to just try the following first and see.

TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2
TMO_Update_20_to_21
RSRDC_TMO_V502
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
Fixed Zero Bomb Load RSRDC
Fixed_CD_sonar_RSRDC
IJN_Radar_Fix_for_TMO2_v1
MaxOptics IV for TMO_2

Ok, I'll do that too. Do you happen to know what version I need to be in to apply the 4Gb Patch? I tried to run the .exe but it said I have an invalid version! I have the base version, plus the 1.4 patch, plus the 1.5 U-Boat missions patch. Thanks!

I don't know what UAC is. Can you elaborate? Thanks.

From Wikipedia:

User Account Control (UAC) is a technology and security infrastructure introduced with Microsoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft)'s Windows Vista (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista) and Windows Server 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Server_2008) operating systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system), with a more relaxed[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Account_Control#cite_note-winsupersiteuac-0) version also present in Windows 7 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Server_2008_R2) . It aims to improve the security of Microsoft Windows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows) by limiting application software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_software) to standard user privileges until an administrator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_administrator) authorizes an increase or elevation. In this way, only applications trusted by the user may receive administrative privileges, and malware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware) should be kept from compromising the operating system. In other words, a user account may have administrator privileges assigned to it, but applications that the user runs do not inherit those privileges unless they are approved beforehand or the user explicitly authorizes it.

I can't tell you all how much I appreciate the valuable assistance you all have given me to fix a problem that has literally plagued me since SH3-GWX. Here is what worked:
1) Installing DX9c over DX11;
2) Reducing Mods to Armistead's basic list (now I will restore others 1 by 1 testing as I go)
3) Updating video and sound drivers to latest releases
4) Installing Large Address Aware for both SH3.exe and SH4.exe (I will do that for all my other sims as well). This was the key, and I think needs to be published as a Sticky for all who encounter the problem of the game freezing in the midst of heavy action.

I now believe that the real problem was running up against the 2Gb memory limitation. In every scenario that failed, it was in a graphic-intensive situation (night with searchlights, many ships, large explosions, much detail). That had to push it over the edge. This time after running the Large Address Aware fix, I went to the previously published intercept point, except that I got so close the lead DD found me, despite silent running, stern to him, and dead in the water. I evaded him to find a Shokaku dead ahead at 700 yards. Four Mark XIV's put it on the bottom! In the course of wildly evading 6 DD's while at PD, the second Shokaku passed astern about 1100 yards; I hit with 2 torps out of 4, but not enough damage to keep it under 10 knots, so it eventually ran out of range as I manoeuvered. Next came a Mogami heavy cruiser: it blew up on the first torpedo hit, which meant I wasted the following 2. Oh well! Wound up sinking 1 fleet carrier, damaging another, sinking 1 heavy cruiser and one Asashio DD, damaging 4 other DDs with single torp hits. Not a bad encounter, and I owe it all to you guys.

A Hearty Salute to all who pitched in, and to all members of SubSim.

Best thing I can do for you is to recommend that you give up Jim Beam and try Woodford Reserve Select, or better yet, Pogue Master Distiller's Reserve. Now THAT's Good Bourbon! :yeah:
