Hey everyone, Im a new member to the forums, have been a longtime viewer. Finally pulled the trigger and joined.
One question I had is I have both SH3 and SH4 and have played both rather extensively. However I am young and a bit reckless so I've tended toward playing on lower realism settings. I have noticed that many members of the forum prefer using higher realism settings, obviously since SH is a subsim:salute:, but if I want an experience where I can knockout a few patrols in a few hours, semi-serious, semi-casual, what settings should I use?

I am looking to post patrol updates and results in the career threads, but I want to hold some credibility. :O: So I want to play on a realism setting where if I do in-fact sink a Battleship, I can feel semi-proud of the feat.

Welcome aboard :salute:
Frau or Jim will be along in a moment to tell you what to edit to retain a high realism setting (99%) whilst keeping all the stuff that makes it easier!
Not everybody likes a high realism setting, personally I stick around 76-ish %. The external camera is just too good to lose, amongst others!

Play at whatever settings make the game enjoyable for you.
If you're worrying about credibility, just say up front what options you have off/on when you make your reports, people will adjust their expectations/assumptions accordingly.
Of if you haven't installed one of the supermods yet, that in itself will make SH3 a little more difficult and realistic.

Far be it from me to lead an innocent n00b down the cheater's path... :nope:
I'll leave that up to Jim, he's had more practice. :arrgh!:

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
Do what makes you happy. It is, after all, a game. I play with fairly high settings, and I do adjust it so it says 99%; and I was probably doing it before either Jim or What's-Her-Name. I'm the weird one though - I like getting full renown for everything, but I never ever actually use it. :dead:

Thank you all!
I appreaciate not only the welcome messages, but also your feedback on realism. I will probably up the realism in chunks, I don't know that I will even make it to 76% or even 99% ( might be the first U-boat lost :rotfl2:) , but I will give myself an increased challenge.

I play with everything checked except "no external view" (what good are great ship graphics if you can't see them) "manual targeting" (it wasn't a one man job in real life, and I don't like playing with a pen and paper next to me) and "no noise meter" (I just like having that crutch).
Play with whatever settings make you happy. They're YOUR games after all! Welcome aboard.
