View Full Version : Any good WW2 games out there that Ive missed?
My dileama is that I really want something WWII related but it seems to have gone out of fashion the past few years in favour of modern warfare.
At the same time I dont really want to buy a game that more than 5 years old if I can help it....
Below are the current WWII games I own.
Wings of Prey (finnished it and I dont want the Luftwaffe expansion unless its uber cheap)
IL2 Cliffs of Dover (runs like a slideshow -so I need to upgrade first)
SH3 (played it to death)
SH4 + addon (never got in to it)
SH5 (on the backburner until its improved)
Company of Heros Collection (played it to death)
Call of Duty 2 (completed & MP played to the death)
Soldier Heros of World war II (loved this but dont want to play though again)
Hidden and Dangerous II (probably one of my favorite WW2 games of all time)
Anyone played Men of War : red tide? I preferably want something with a bit of strategy rather than just mindless shooting.
Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory (With latest BDG patches)
- Best AI you can find in this genre.
Close Combat series (I suggest the remakes: The Longest Day, Wacht am Rhein, Last Stand Arnhem)
- AI can be a tad stupid at times, but I still keep getting back to the CC series
over and over again. Excellent for online matches.
Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy just released the other day, and sounds quite up your alley - you don't get more complex and smart than these. Theater of War series of games also sound like something you might enjoy, though I can't vouch for them myself as I never really got into them.
Hearts of Iron series games, on the grand strategy side of things, are all about WWII (can't vouch for HoI III as I'm yet to get into it).
On the more action, but not completely stupid side, I certainly enjoyed the Brothers in Arms series quite a bit. I prefer it to other FPS treatments of WWII, actually, including the old CoD.
And yes, I definitely echo Dowly's recommendation of BoB II. Not only is the AI great, but you also get practically two games for the price of one - a flight sim and a strategy, since you can control the entire campaign yourself. Great stuff, though also a sharp learning curve.

A third thumbs up for BoB II. I bought it on the cheap out of the bargain bin, wasn't expecting to be too thrilled, but was thoroughly impressed right from the start. I just might reinstall that baby for the heck of it. :DL
For grand strategy I have enjoyed Hearts of Iron (1 & 2) immensely. :yep:

Boardgame: Conflict of heroes storms of steel Kursk 1943(ground warfare tactical action), Asia engulfed(for fleet action)
Must have classic PC game: Combat Mission 1(all) despite them being more than 5 years old game they are absolutely fantastic.
Thanks guys. :salute:
Red Orchestra 2 isnt out yet, but i plan on getting it.
Bob 2 WOV, Im reluctant, as I owned it before back in 2005 and sold it on- maybe i should revisit it?
Combat missions and close combat both look intresting and Im gonna check them out.
Bothers In arms - the first two are very cheap on steam, I just might pick them up.
Hearts of Iron Im also mulling over.
The BDG patches have done a lot for the game, it's a lot more customisable for your wishes and you won't get a better atmospheric Battle of Britain game out there, CLOD may look prettier but it seems to lack a lot, chief among which is the inability to play it on anything much short of a Cray supercomputer.
Men of war is a good RTS, but can be very frustrating in places, beware the Japanese super-tanks when playing in multiplayer. Commanders of War is a good mod for the original Men Of War, it adds some nice units and guns (like the Flak 36) and adds the option for era specific games such as a 1941 match (units restricted to those available in 1941) and so on. Can be unbalanced if you play the wrong teams (US vs UK 1941 is a bloodbath for the Yanks because they lack any decent AT guns and the best tank they have is the ugLee). I can't advise on Red Tide because I don't have it.
Assault squad is more of the same but with talking Japanese (something missed in the original), more missions and graphical tweaks. The Japanese super-tanks are still OMGWTFHAAX and the same frustrations are prevailant in AS that are in the original MOW, so if you don't like the original, you won't like this.
Close Combat, well you can't go wrong with this series, good solid RTS, good playerbase, some very nice mods. Have a read of this gem from RPS to get you in the mood:

Combat Mission...I can't say I've had much experience with this...although I do think I recall playing a demo of Barbarossa to Berlin and being quite impressed by it. Judging by the glowing reports from Arclight I'd say that the latest offering has built upon this.
Brothers In Arms...I have Road to Hill 30 on the PS2, I liked the fire team control and the suppression modelling and the fact that you have to think tactically, you can't just charge in like Medal of Honour and empty your BAR into them, it's a quick way to get yourself turned into a colander.
Theatre of War looks good too...it looks a bit like Men of War but with a much more realistic map size which is something that did annoy me in Men of War that Tanks can only really engage from something like forty meters when in reality they could be firing at each other from well over double that distance. However I haven't played this, Raptor and Task Force have and I think Stabiz as well so they would have better ideas on this.
While you're waiting for RO2, why not get RO1 if you haven't already and get Darkest Hour for it. There's some good servers about, the tanks are fun to crew with friends, particularly if you have teamspeak. The modelling seems relatively good. I find it a bit frustrating though because I often spend about two seconds alive before being shot by someone whilst I'm on foot and I never seem to be able to shoot them. In a tank though things are a bit different, so that helps.

Close Combat: LSA is one of the better RTS games I've played. The graphics threw me off a little at first, but the gameplay is solid and challenging. A rare gem that kicked my butt more times than I care to remember. :DL

The Men of War series is pretty good Men of War and Men of War:Red Tide(my favorite but it lacks multiplayer) and Men of War Assault Squad(which the single player is meh the online is pretty good)
I really like with MOW and Red Tide you have many ways to achieve your objectives which makes for lots of fun and playability.Red Tide is more small unit action you play as Soviet Naval Infantry.A few of the missions took me some time to crack in one mission you must destroy some of the big guns the Germans where using against Sevastopol. It is a good mix of playability and using the noggin and I like the missions where you are using mainly troops more.
Some say that it is like the COH series which is not true at all COH is a RTS and MOH you dont build anything it has RTs elements but I'd not call it a pure RTS.There is a playable demo of MOW on STEAM.Or look it up on youtube there are som good clips on there that show you how the game plays. Also i play the MOW series off-line and tend to use tanks a bit less so I'd say MOW offline very good on-line play frustrating namely Assault Squad. Most like Red Tide the least but I love it thanks to the game play style.Oh and the battle outside of Moscow in MOW that is epic fun I took over an 88mm once and parked in the road and just blasted every German vehicle in site until they finally over ran me.The battle controlling the soviet penal battalion is pretty fun too.
I had the first Theater of War and it was brutality difficult though I liked the elements in it the way the AI worked I did not really like it that much it just seemed to be a great concept poorly executed and I have been reluctant to try the newer ones because in most reviews it gets the same low marks each time.
I also have Steel Fury which is a WWII Eastern Front tank sim there are a good number of mods for it and it has many players who are members here check out the offshot tanksim.com which is on the main forums page.I also forgot that the MOW series has tons of mods out there for it and is very mod friendly,Steel Fury uses JSGME just like SH.

No one has suggested sudden strike or blitzkrieg? I prefer the games from the other side of the wall because they dont have AMERICANS ARE THE ONLY GOOD GUYS!!!1111oneoneuno. Generally they treat all the different sides with an equal feeling. I dunno, it might be just me.

... come again? Most of those games let you play either side. Pretty sure most people actually prefer playing Axis or Red Army over Allies.
Another vote for Men of War series, Combat Mission BfN and HoI3. You might have a look at Matrix Games' catalog, plenty of WWII grand strategy there I think. (I'd recommend War in the Pacific, but it is so complex that I still haven't gotten started on it yet)

Pacific Storm Allies is good. Not the typical genre for WW2 out there. Its pretty much a WW2 resource and logistics sim. It combines alot fo stategy and tactics with rts style game play. It also allows you to hop into fighters, bombers, ships, gunner positions, and help in battles.
You spend most of the game patrolling with scouts and manuevering your fleets and command officers to capture and invade territories. You then have to build and upgrade what you capture. Everything you destroy in the game has a function and value behind it. You destroy fuel dumps you reduce the amount of fuel the enemy has. You take out a factory or barracks they loose production or infantry. So, you aren't just blowing up stuff aimlessly.
You collect resources and manufacture everything you send into battle. The technologies you research help you make key histroical advancements in vehicles and weapons during the war all the way up to the development of the atomic bomb. To deliver the bomb you have to combine various elements including a weapon delivery system to transport it over target you want to use it on.
Its the only game where I have seen the ability to build a weapon such as the a-bomb, place it on a ship, move it to a location with an airfield, then place it on a long range bomber to deliver to the enemy. All while trying to protect each stage of the delivery to the enemy. The game is great in that you really see the value of everything used in battles and really feel a loss when you lose a unit.
It really puts empasis on resources, protecting what you have, and denying the enemy the ability to access his own to use against you. You spend much of the game determining risk, timing, and location of each your attacks.

That could be the 'lite' Pacific War game I've been looking for.
Snagged on Steam for nine quid.
. (I'd recommend War in the Pacific, but it is so complex that I still haven't gotten started on it yet)
WiTP isn't complex, it's just 'differently simple'. :03:
My vote is for Combat Mission: Beyond Normandy. It's pretty special. Try the demo and see for yourself.

My guess would be Battlestations: Midway and Battlestations: Pacific

Pacific Storm I would say is a great Pacific theatre game.
Lets you play either side, control production, logistics, position, etc. So it plays like a grand Strategy game (to a point) but also lets you jump into tactical battles as well.
Also has a nifty feature where you can control different modules on your units by a research interface. Kind of cool I thought.

Day of Defeat:Source - bit older but for me still a No.1 WW2 shooter. 10€ if you buy over the Steam platform
Man of War - Great in a multiplayer mode, due to possibilities of micromanagement (crawl with a single solder and throw a granate yourself) or tactical (send 10 tenks to fight their way through). A fun thing to do is to manually operate a mortar or two :) -10€ or so

I tried Pacific Storm:Allies. When Great Britain traded the HMS Hood to Japan for some resources was the last time I ever played it. That was as unrealistic as it can possibly get.
