Mac lovers do it with BootCamp

I'm a 100% Macintosh Man as a rule. Other than Silent Hunter I see no reason to have a Windows PC. I used to have a piece of junk PC that a friend made up for me purely for playing SHII. I have had SHIII for ages but could never justify buying a Windows machine just for the game.

I then discovered Boot Camp. (For non-Apple people this is a Mac utility that allows you to partition the hard drive to format part of it as Windows).

I thought I would give it a try and I am now playing SHIII through Windows XP on my MacBook Pro. True it does crash out occasionally, but not too often to be a real bind, and I can stay with the Mac that I love.

Anybody else tried it this way?

I've used both operating systems for many years. Switched to a MacBook Pro 5 years ago. I use Boot Camp as well.

Game plays just fine, except I can't run the Merchant mod with my rig. I wish my keyboard had a number pad, but I suppose I could just get a separate USB keyboard.

I was considering a Mac when I was looking for a new laptop but the price put me right off that idea.

timmy41 & Bakkels—I promise I won't attempt to turn this into a Mac v pc escapade: just take it as read timmy41, that Mac-users tend to be an arrogant bunch (crashes are pretty much unheard of). I was just curious to know if anyone else had tried it this way and if they had any advice.

E.g. Hotspur1337—does the GW mod work with BootCamp? I'm currently using the bog-standard (1.4b).

I've noticed an issue with saving in that saves sometimes—for no reason I can detect—disappear. That is, they appear to save ok then, 1 day, 2 days later whatever, they just aren't there any more—not in the list that is.

GWX works just fine. Sometimes I get a corrupt save that crashes to desktop, but I think that is fairly common regardless of the computer.

I just don't have enough RAM to run the Merchant mod, and I don't want to spend the money on more, so I'm content with the stock skins.

Boot Camp is nothing more than a way to partition the HDD so that you can then install Windows OS on that partition. It only works with Intel Macs, BTW. There's also a program called Parallels that does not require that you reboot to switch OSs, but I've heard it is less stable.

There is no need to install Windows, as SH3 works with Cider too. That's how I play.

I'd never heard of Cider. I got SHIII to run in Mac OSX with it. Now I just have to figure out how to get my career files to work.

Okay, Cider is not an equivalent option.

It doesn't seem to be able to let the game access the graphics card properly, so the graphics are terrible. (Yes, my drivers are the latest.)

Accessing the function keys requires holding the fn button as well - not handy. They work normally in BootCamp/Win XP.

Also, the display resolution is lower, and SH3 doesn't give you any options for adjusting.

The only inconvenience of BootCamp is having to reboot to get into Windows, but it doesn't take all that long.

I'm glad you told me about Cider though, because it may be a viable option for other Windows programs on the Mac.

Yea older versions got the gfx wrong, but around revision 4473 it's been fixed, works just the same as on Windows.

Function keys can be switched to the desired behaviour in System Preferences / Keyboard.

Career files should be put in ~/Library/Preferences/whatever-is-in-Info.plist-PrefsFolderName-variable/etc... or in the .app dir, depends on the particular Cider setup.
