View Full Version : CTD After 31 Patrols
Any thoughts as to why SH4 would suddenly start crashing to desktop after 31 patrols with 4 dfferent subs in TMO21/RSRDC? I've obsessively been running TMO for the past month or so and it's been satisfyingly flawless (aside from no radar on a Porpoise Class). I haven't changed a thing in my Mods list so I don't know why this would start crashing. It first happened in a Balao out of Freemantle on a patrol off the northwest coast of Borneo in the area of 3 40 N, 110 30E. After the CTD I went to my last save and the same thing happened again in the same place. So after a few more tries I restarted from base and another CTD in the same place. So I restarted the patrol from base again but decided to bag the mission and rack up some tonnage in the Makassar Strait and waters north. Going pretty good for a while but then CTD again. The only other thing in common is the date which is July 25, 1943. It's not my system and I tried the 4GB patch. I'm running XP on a MSI X48C Platinum motherboard with a Intel Q9400 Core2 Quad processor, ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphic card, SoundBlaster Audigy sound card with enough power from a 750 W power supply.

Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any suggestions? Is there any significance to July 25, 1943 being the date of these CTDs and/or in this region, such as a conflict between TMO and RSRDC? I consider these mods as game savers (i.e., I would have thrown SH4 away without them) and works of art so I kind of doubt there's a problem there, but I have to ask? I've run an S-Boat and Porpoise through this date in a different region with no problem.
I really don't want to lose this campaign.
I just ran a Gato out of Freemantle with the same mission only later (Sept. 17, 1943) with no CTD. I went a little further with the Balao again and restarted that same mission, but this time I parked it out in the middle of the Indian Ocean and ran the TC at 6656 the whole way. CTD again on July 25, 1943. However, it did make it a little later into the evening before the first CTD. Is GMT (Zulu) a factor and could this be due to the fact that it was a little further west?
Also, if its meaningful, the error report listed the following:
App name: sh4.exe
App Ver: 1.5.0.0
Mod name: sound.act
Mod Ver: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 00001dd3

All right, just throwing out some fish bate here but I see one thing that may be wrong in your mods list.
TMO_Update_20_to_21 should be immediately after TMO_2.
Don't know if this is your problem? It may be the deck gun or SJ radar mod.
What it sounds like is a boat upgrade problem as it happens on the same date and the game was very stable up to then. I don't know if TMO_Update_20_to_21 changes upgrades?
I don't like anything in program files folder but as you are running XP that should not be a problem. With Vista or Win 7 it is.
According to Duci Webster's Ship Maneuvering Fix dose not work well with TMO, nerfs some of his settings I think. Doubt that this would cause your problem.
Just fishing here, maybe we'll catch something or not.

Yup, that's the first thing that caught my attention too. Not that it definitely is the exact cause of the problem, but it might be. Whatever TMO add-ons you have installed prior to the patch will be overwritten by the patch, and that could potentially cause conflicts.
Thanks for the input guys. I see what you're saying about the order of installation. I mistakenly thought I read in one of the docs that I was supposed to do it that way; however, after reviewing the documentation again I see that I should have done it exactly as you say. I reinstalled the mods in the proper order and gave it a try with the same results. At least I have these in the proper order now. I don't know what it could be that's causing this crash. As I stated, running these mods has been virtually flawless over 31 patrols using 4 different subs with no problem. Real time seems to get me by, but that would take a very long time to finish this patrol. Even TC up to 32x causes the crash. It seems to be this one sub on this one patrol. I tried running the crap out of the other ones and no CTD. Does the "Mod name: sound.act" in the error report strike a chord with either of you?
I really don't want to lose this patrol. I'm in the Celebes Sea working my way toward Freemantle via the Makassar Strait with 40,814 tons under my belt, 4 fish in the tubes, and 150 rounds of HE left. But, if I must...
Thanks again for your help on this. I appreciate your taking the time to give it some thought.

You might try removing the CBS mod maybe there is something that is supposed to happen on that date that isn't.
You might try going at 1X for a day to get past the 25th. and see what happens. Besides in your heart you really did want to run a 1X patrol. :D
You might be able to go as high as 8X, I've notice that some things just seem to go differently above 8X.
If you got kids have them watch the game for you, make them earn all the food and shelter. :know: :yeah:

The way I've been glued to that thing for the past month or two, it wouldn't suprise them on bit if I asked them to do it. I just might try nursing it along until the 26th. First I have to look myself in the mirror and really evaluate the importance of saving that patrol. It's quite obvious how this thing has taken over my judgement. Is this really rational thinking on my part? I can't help it though. After the three years of fighting the stock and it's issues, then to experience TMO/RSRDC is like a fix for a junkie in the depths of withdrawals. Sure my wife might leave me... As long as I get the computer... Of course I'm kidding.
Aside from the patrol, I am concerned about the underlying problem and the possibility of problems down the line.

That is what a good simulation is supposed to do. If you're still married and the kids talk to you, you're not into the sim enough. :haha::haha::haha:
You sound like me. I was playing Roller coaster Tycoon and all the sudden I get CTD after CTD. I played every minute I could trying to find the problem.
Only thing that caused CTD was that game. Finely found the problem and it had nothing to do with the game other than that is all I ran that would tax the computer enough.
Well good luck with it but when you look in the mirror just remember that there is a war on and you must suck it up a bit. Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead and all that stuff.

I reinstalled the mods in the proper order and gave it a try with the same results. That might be due to your old saved games still being infected with the old mods line-up. BTW, I'd lose the "Torpedo Graphics for TMO+RFB" also. TMO has it's own colored torps and a fix that's cross-mod compatible (TMO+RFB) might cause a conflict.

Thanks Wernher. I'll give it a try. I'll pull that one and the CBS mod from the list as suggested by Magic and start from base. I ran a patrol in an S boat out of Dutch Harbor last night with no problems. Maximum TC most of the way just in an effort to force a CTD, but it ran fine. It seems to be this one patrol that's causing the problem.
As soon as I get the chance I'll fire up the other computer and give it a try from base.
Thanks again Wernher.
I believe we have a winner. I pulled the torpedo graphics and CBS radio mods from the lineup and departed Freemantle on July 14, 1943 in the Balao to 11 0S, 110 30E and sat there with TC at 4608x. As of July 26th there was no CTD. I exited and put the torpedo graphics back into the lineup and followed the exact same process with no CTD. I exited and placed the CBS radio mod back into the lineup and repeated the exact same process again and got a CTD at approximately 3 pm on July 25th. So it looks like Captain Midnight has to hit the road. Now I'll see if I can keep my patrol.
Thanks you guys. I hope that someday I can return the favor.

I'm going to venture a guess that it was possibly the radio mod that caused the problem. I don't remember which forum I read it at, quite a while ago, but one or more persons was having problems after installing one of the radio mods. Can't remember the details either but after you mentioned it, it jogged my memory.

As always, I really appreciate the assistance from both of you. Yes, it was definitely the Captain Midnight CBS radio mod. I didn't listen to it very often, but it was fun on occasion. On the bright side, I spent the last four hours finishing the Balao patrol and quite successfully I might add. Since the CTD problem was solved I decided to complete my mission orders so I went to Darwin, killing an Akita Maru on the way, and reloaded. I still had 3 in the tubes so it turned out to be a 45 fish patrol. In the end I sunk 17 merchants for 90,266 tons and bagged two A6M2Ns. Three of those merchants in dense fog using radar for course, speed, and AOB; and sonar for range and bearing. Got back to Fremantle and recieved the Navy Cross (I needed to add this to show that I can spell "Fremantle" unlike in my earlier posts). By far my best patrol since using manual targeting.
Anyway, I'm happy now and my wife isn't as happy, but as always it'll pass. Thanks again guys.
