Hi all,

this is probably old hat but.......

Firstly, having not been able to get SH3 to work on a 64 bit version of Windows 7, I decided to give up to have a go with SH4.

Now that I have managed to get in to SH4 it I'm loving it as much as SH3 and I've downloaded the TMO and patch and RSRD and patch supermods which make the stock game brillient so a big thankyou to Damarcus and co. Why couldn't Ubisoft incorporate this in the stck game in the first place?

I've noticed that the game crashes quite frequently particularly when returning and docking at Pearl Harbour but also at random times elsewhere.

My OS is Windows 7 64 bit ultimate ed and I have an I7 920 cpu, 12 gig of RAM, Gainwood nvidia 295GTX, and 250 GB SSD.

I have already tried completely un-installing and reinstalling as the game, then the Uboat missions then TMO2, TMO 2.1 patch then RSRD 502 and finally the RSRD patch.

Is this a known problem and if so is there a fix?

Thanks for any comments

Dave:damn:

Hi Dave! SH3, in my experience do not have any problems with W7, might depend on how your installation went to, I myself have it on W7 64 bits, and no problems at all ... so why not make an attempt to, if you feel like it, we'll help you resolve any problems, :yep:

Thanks, I'll try another un-install and re-install to see if that resolves the problem.

Before I do that though I'll try something with my hard drive. I have a crucial SSD drive operating via an ASUS daughter board to give a sata 6 connection. I have noticed once or twice that the pc has failed to find the drive on bootup so it may be just a bad connection on my pcie slot and the crashes have been caused by SH4 failing to find the drive. Failing that I will have to plug it into my normal sata 2 connections on the mobo.

Ah, windows 7.... I have it for some 6 months now and every single damn game presents some sort of issue...

If you re-install the game put it into a folder other than Programs Files.
Make a separate folder. Program Files causes CTD issues when mods are installed. More so with Vista but also with Win 7.

Magic is correct. This will fix 90% of your crash problems. Also, if you are loading a saved game, be sure you save from the control room (F2) and no closer than 50nm to land. My Win7 64-bit works fine for both SH3-GWX3 and SH4 (TMO2.1+RSRDC, et al)

I want to agree with everyone as well. No probs with Windows7 64, but you need to do a few things first to save yourself some big headaches. First of all, there are "stickied" threads in both the SH4 Mods forum, and the General Discussion forum on game installation with both Vista and 7. Folow them exactly. In a nutshell: Install the game directly to the C drive in a folder that you create. Installing to the Program/X86 is a no no. Be sure to update your DX9c. Don't worry about the DX version of Windows7, updateing the 9c will only update files the game needs, and will not overwrite your existing DX.

Another thing to check is that your SH4 shortcut is pointing to "SH4exe" and not "SH4gui". Also with the shortcut, right click the shortcut and click the "properties" tab. Look for the "compatabilities" tab and click that. Now, checkoff "Run as administrator". Be sure not to run in XP mode.

As a final thing you could do, you could search the Downloads section and check out the 4gig patch. This little utility allows SH4 (and any application really) to access more memory. I installed it and it has cured my random crashes despite the fact I have 6gigs of ram.

Thanks for all the comments.

I have done a complete re-install to the C: directory with TMO and RSRDC and also a couple of additional mods and to date not a crash in sight....but early days yet only 2 trouble free outings but I'll keep you posted.

A couple of things that I have noticed though is that after installing the aircraft crashing mod I now get warnings that an aircraft has been spotted but more than 50% of the time there is no aircraft. Is this how the fix works [the aircraft has be detected beyond visual range although when this occured I had no SD radar fitted] or do I have a problem with the fix not working quite right? Another thing is that I have installed the mod for medels and it reverts the TMO version back from 2.1 to 1.9 is this correct has it overwritten the TMO update and put TMO back to the 1.9?

I have not tried the 4 gig fix yet but I have taken onboard some comments on other threads about only saving games when in map mode and also pausing the game.

Frustrating as all this is, is it worth it......yes it is. But why Ubisoft don't listen to groups like this and produce what the sub community want in the first place I'll never know.

SH4 still working well and not a single crash after 4 days and deliberately doing all the things that I thought made it crash before so putting it in the root directory rather than in the default seems to have worked. A big thanks to all the people that helped.

One last problem. I'm running the stock gramophone MOD from TMO and the medals fix for TMO from Latency. If I install the gramophone last the medals don't display properly and if I install the medals fix last the gramaphone doesn't work so I can't play some of the cool WWII music tracks that are in the MOD section. Is there a fix to use both properly at the same time?

Also how do you use the sub skins and emblems? I have installed the mods using JSGME but do these get offered when you have enough renown or do you have to manually put them in the sub data files?

Thanks

Dave

Hi and thanks to all the people the lent a helping hand to get my SH4 up and running on W7 64. It's been over 2 weeks now and not a crash in sight except when I managed to beach my Gato on a reef. :D Even my Windows reliability indicator has now reached 10 which until the problem was sorted it was bumping at 3-5 with all my crashes atributable to SH4. I have enabled numerous mods over he top of TMO and RSRDC with no problem.

I'd also like to add that I have also got SH3 with GW working albeit with the crack available to bypass the Starforce security.

So to confirm what most already know, don't use the default directory I now use c:\ubisoft\SH4.

Also if you want music but can't get it to work through the gramaphone in TMO just put the tracks in the radio station folder with Capt Midnights CBS download and then use the radio.
