It is November 22 of 42' and I have been on patrol for the last 2 weeks near Bouganville. I haven't seen a single ship.
I headed to Truk and sank a ship, but since I wasn't near my objective marker on the map, it didn't count
Any suggestions?

Sometimes you just don't get lucky on a patrol, I have had some dry patrols myself but I always go into the next one with high hopes and frequently find my own ways to make trouble for the Imperial navy.
Raiding ports is never a bad idea, tonnage is tonnage after all.

Any suggestions?I don't understand. What type of objective marker was it, and what was your objective?

You should be getting some Tokyo Express action in that vacinity. That's odd that it's boring in that area.
Tokyo Express action is a lot of fun! 5 to 7 DDs, at high speed, firing torps at 2 or 3 DDs, and the rest come after you. It's not boring then for sure!

I wonder why all I've gotten are air contacts then...

If you're playing stock, lil Solomon's action compared to history. If playing RSRD, you can virtually walk on ships Nov. 42..Several large surface battles between the fleets near Savo around Nov 12-18th. Also a few large convoys. All the bigger battles are well done with RSRD, battle of Santa Cruz, Eastern Solomons, Savo Island, GC, etc....
I think stock has one battle.

The straight between New Ireland and Rabaul should be crowdy, if you don't mind the planes. And as far as i know, this kind of mission objective does not prevent you to sink ships anywhere in the map.
Rabaul is a military base, there should be some nice targets there, maybe even battleships or fleet carriers. If you woke up this morning feeling like Gunther Prien, try a raid there! Should be close to impossible though, the harbor is inside a tight bay and escorts should be everywhere.
