This will make you not want to fly for a little while. It’s footage of a Tupelov Tu-154 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu-154) airliner struggling to stay aloft amidst severe oscillations. It’s downright scary to watch. This was apparently the plane’s first flight after emerging from long term storage at an air base outside of Moscow. Well done to the pilots who eventually landed the plane safely.

Severe is an understatement. Be patient, the camera man doesn't 'lock' on to his 'target' until 42 secs into video.

I actually don't know what could cause such oscillations other than inexperienced flight students (pilot induced oscillation...not that that has ever happened to me when I was new to glider flying:O:) or a completely screwed up loading of the plane (or maybe screwed up fly by wire controls :hmm2:).

Pretty decent wiki article on what's called Dutch Roll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_roll), including ways in which such an effect is initiated. Looks like perhaps in this case there's some control inputs that aren't being registered correctly/at all.

There's the longer version with the landing even.

Well darn, who let the Lolwaffles reprogram the autopilot :dead:

If I were him I'd have pulled the landing gear up, popped slight spoiler, and attempted a flat spin recovery - even tho there was no total spin - had he lost his airspeed, thats what would have happened. Opposite rudder and aileron.

And if that didn't work - center the controls.

We don't need autopilots for that, we crash our planes all by ourselves!:timeout:

Opposite rudder and aileron.

That's the first time I hear to give counter ailerons to recover from a spin...on the other hand I've never flown an airliner.:hmm2:

Upon reading the word "Tupolev", I had the exact same thought.
